And with his victory over former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and nine other candidates, Mamdani took a big step towards the first Muslim mayor and first millennium in New York.

Fateh won the approval on the outgoing mayor Jacob Frey, who arises for a third term. But Frey, who has repeatedly faced during his mandate with a left -wing municipal council in the highly blue city, remains on the ballot and will compete with Fateh during the November elections.

And similar to New York, Minneapolis will use the voting classified as a choice to determine his next mayor.

“This approval is a message that Minneapolis residents have made broken promises, vetos and politics as usual. It is a mandate to build a city that works for all of us,” Fateh told Frey.

But Frey stressed that “this election should be decided by our entire city, not by a handful of delegates. I am impatient of a full debate with Senator Fateh on our files and visions for the future of our Minneapolis. In November!”

Fateh, similar to Mamdani, offers voters what can be characterized as an extreme left program.

In New York, Mamdani pushes proposals to eliminate prices to set up the vast bus system from New York, making Cuny (City University of New York), without tuition fees, rents on municipal housing, offering “free daycare” for children up to 5 years and the implementation of municipal housing, offering “free daycares” grocery stores managed by the government.

The president of the RNC maintains that Mamdani “ Faced with the New Democratic Party ”

Fateh, the son of immigrant parents of Somalia who, five years ago, became the first Somali-American elected to the Minnesota Senate, promises an elected mayor to increase the minimum wage of the city, increase the supply of affordable housing and fight what he calls police violence. Similar to Mamdani, Fateh calls to replace some of the functions of the police service with alternatives led by the community. He also wants to issue legal identity documents to undocumented immigrants.

Larry Jacobs, professor of public affairs at the University of Minnesota, underlined the many parallels between Mamdani and Fateh.

But he noted that “the big difference is in Minneapolis, you have a mayor with two mandates who is probably always the favorite to win.”

Jacobs stressed that the Democratic Party is going through “post blues”. He underlined an “authentic division on party leadership and this division is partly between a younger socialist element … and a more moderate version of the party which has relations with business and decreases the disruptive change”.

The Republicans were relentless to target Mamdani and his far left proposals. They tried several times to make him the face of the Democratic Party while trying to anchor him with vulnerable democrats to be re -elected in the middle of next year.
