Project 2029: the Biden Sullivan advisor draws fire in democratic reset

Democrats assemble a new political trust of the brain called Project 2029, an effort aimed at shaping the long -term vision of the party and regaining electoral force.
But at a time when there is a general agreement that Democrats need new and new voices, the inclusion of long -standing party initiates – in particular the national security adviser of former president Joe Biden, Jake Sullivan – raises eyebrows through the political spectrum.
“It is really disappointing to see the lack of self -awareness from Jake,” said Brett Bruen, former director of world engagement at the White House of Obama. “Having Jake involved, not to mention leading this, will only lead to stupid and superficial changes.”
“These Democratic leaders must take a long look in the mirror and understand that they played a big role in setting up this situation – and the release of the scene.”

Modeled in the name and structure after the Conservative project of the Heritage Foundation 2025, Project 2029 brings together high -level democrats to describe a political roadmap. After a decade of more respect against President Donald Trump than for anything else, the group is devoted to helping Democrats define the policies that can win the 2028 elections.
The initiative, reported for the first time by the New York Times, is led by the longtime democrat strategist Andrei Cherny and a distribution of familiar faces – in particular Sullivan, Neera Tanden, Biden National Policy Advisor; Anne-Marie Slaughter, CEO of New America; Justin Wolfers, economist at the University of Michigan; Jim Kessler, co-founder of Third Way; And Felicia Wong, former president of the Roosevelt Institute.
But the role of Sullivan aroused particular criticism of both republicans and progressives.
Sullivan was the best adviser to Biden during the chaotic withdrawal in 2021 of Afghanistan, which resulted in the death of 13 American soldiers. He would have proposed to resign at the time once the evacuation did not go as planned.
He also caught fire for the failure of the Biden administration to help Israel and Hamas to reach a lasting ceasefire, and for his Ukrainian policy-who, like a European diplomat with Fox News Digital, seemed to aim to allow Ukraine “to lose”.
“Why doesn’t Jake Sullivan work at Chipotle?” joked Steven Moore, founder of Ukraine Freedom Project, on one podcast in 2024.
“Jake in his post both as a national security advisor and in Biden World is one of the last people on earth which should be involved in a reset for the Democratic Party,” said Bruen.

Sullivan did not respond to a request for comments from Fox News Digital.
Zohran Momdani’s astonishing disorder in the primary mayor of New York against former governor Andrew Cuomo rekindled a debate on the question of whether the Democrats at the national level must begin to take progressiveness seriously.
“People responsible for driving the Democratic Party in a ditch now require the keys,” said Joseph Geevarghese, Executive Director of the Progressive Group Our Revolution. “Managers like Zohran Mamdani show what is possible when you talk directly to the pain in the working class and resist rooted power.”
Despite criticism, some Democrats defend the role of Sullivan and believe that he could help unify the party.
“He is a historic organizer of the various ways of democratic foreign policy, and he did an excellent job with this,” said Joel Rubin, former assistant state secretary and Democratic strategist. However, Rubin asked what extent the real influence project 2029 would have, in particular without a runner before Clear 2028.
“We are going to have a large open primary,” said Rubin. “Unlike Project 2025, where the Republicans had a candidate pending Trump, we do not have a standard carrier. The 2029 project will therefore be one of the many plans for a democratic administration should do.”
Some maintain that figures like Sullivan are better suited to fill the gap between the figures of the establishment and the progressives than any left -wing chief.
“He is part of the old guard, but the old guard is not so old. There are many young people,” said a Democrat initiate. “You would find it difficult to find people in the progressive path that pulls in the people of the Establishment, while the establishment lane works to attract progressives.”

Critics of the Sullivan GOP also underline its role in promoting allegations now beginning in the 2016 elections.
After a Slate report said Trump Tower maintained a secret server communicating with the Russian Alfa bank, Sullivan – then principal advisor to Hillary Clinton – amplified the complaint.
“This could be the most direct link to date between Donald Trump and Moscow,” Sullivan said in a statement at the time. “This secret hotline can be the key to unlocking the mystery of Trump’s ties with Russia.”
The Republicans subsequently accused it of disseminating unaccountable information and deceive the public.
