Portland is expected to consider new legislation that would further strengthen the policies of the city’s sanctuary and limit cooperation with the federal immigration authorities.

The Community and Public Security Committee of the Municipal Council is expected to examine on Tuesday an order which would codify the Portland protections in binding law of the city. It would extend a 2017 resolution which declared Portland a sanctuary city.

The draft order prohibits the use of city resources to enforce federal immigration laws and prohibits employees, entrepreneurs and police from helping federal immigration agents who seek to investigate or hold alleged illegal immigrants.

It also prevents municipal agencies from collecting or sharing information with immigration and customs application (ICE), unless contraction by a court order.

“The City of Portland recognizes and values the various contributions of all individuals and affirms its commitment to deal with all people with dignity and respect, regardless of race, color, national origin, immigration or refugee status,” the order in part.

All city employees would be required to take a training course covering sanctuary policies, the difference between administrative and judicial mandates and how to react if immigration agents are trying to access the city’s goods or information.

The city would also designate all municipal buildings as “safe spaces of the sanctuary city” with signaling in several languages clarifying public and limited areas.

Another provision obliges the city to regularly file the requests for the Freedom of Information Act from the Ministry of Internal Security and Ice, and to disclose legally disclosed information – such as the names of those held in Portland and the alleged offenses – to the mayor, to the Council and to the public at least once a year.

Each office should also submit quarterly reports to the completion of training and the application for the application of immigration.

Exceptions would only apply in cases where Portland police arrested a person officially accused of federal immigration crimes under a judicial mandate. Such arrests must be disclosed in an annual report to the Council, including the names of civil servants and federal agents involved.

More than two dozen people have submitted written testimonies on the issue, according to Katu.

Only one of the written testimonies opposed the proposal. One of the supporters wrote: “I think it is important to reflect our shared values in our city code and not to count on state policy.”

The Portland municipal council is made up of 12 members, all Democrats. The mayor is also a democrat.

Fox News Digital contacted the mayor’s office of Portland and the municipal council to comment but did not immediately hear.
