New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani appeared to dodge a question about the House voting in favor of a resolution condemning socialism before his high-stakes meeting with President Donald Trump.
As he arrived in Washington, D.C., Mamdani was asked what he thought about the vote, and he responded, “Brother, I can tell you all I was thinking about was preparing for this meeting and speaking for New Yorkers.”
On Friday, the House passed a resolution condemning socialism just hours before self-described democratic socialist Mamdani arrived at the White House. The resolution passed 285-98, with 86 Democrats joining Republicans, including House Minority Leader Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., who supported Mamdani. Two Democrats, Rep. Deborah Ross, D-N.C., and Rep. Janelle Bynum, D-Ore., voted present.

86 DEMS VOTE WITH REPUBLICANS TO CONDEMN SOCIALISM FOLLOWING THE VICTORY OF THE MAYOR OF MAMDANI
“It has been decided by the House of Representatives that Congress denounces socialism in all its forms and opposes the implementation of socialist policies in the United States,” the text reads.
Trump previously called Mamdani a “crazy communist,” while the mayor-elect vowed to “test” New York City. However, the two men cooled their rhetoric about each other in recent days before their meeting.

On Friday, Trump told Fox News’ Brian Kilmeade that he anticipated the meeting would be “pretty civil” and that they would “get along great” despite their differences. The president said he and Mamdani wanted the same thing: “to make New York stronger.”

The mayor-elect told reporters Thursday that while he had “many disagreements” with the president, he would “work with him on any program that would benefit New Yorkers.”
“If a program harms New Yorkers, I will also be the first to say something,” Mamdani added.
