The mayor of Portland, Keith Wilson, rejected President Donald Trump’s plan on Saturday to send federal troops to the largest city in Oregon, saying that there is no anarchy or violence there.

Trump announced on Saturday morning that he planned to send troops to Portland at the request of the Homeland Security Secretary, Kristi Noem.

The president said that he had ordered the Pete Hegseth War Secretary to provide “all the troops necessary to protect Portland ravaged by war, and all our siege ice facilities against antifa attack and other domestic terrorists”, adding that he was authorizing full force, if necessary.

A few hours later, Wilson said at a press conference that the number of troops required was “zero” in Portland “and any other American city”.

“This is an American city,” said Wilson. “We don’t need intervention. It is not a military target.”

The mayor alleged that the president “would not find” anarchy or violence in the city, claiming that video sequences showing violence in the city came from five years ago, it was “recycled then recycled”.

“If President Trump came to Portland today, what he would find, they are people who ride on their bikes, played sports, enjoying the sun, buying grocery products or producing from a producer market,” said Wilson. “We had difficult conversations and we did an important job in the years that followed this sequence, we have reformed our public security system. We have refocused our community and our economy, and we have redoubled our efforts to help our most vulnerable.”

Since June, demonstrations have broken out near an ice installation in Portland, where city officials have cited violations of land use, including inappropriate detention times and windows on board.

The building has been vandalized with anti-ice graffiti and clashes between demonstrators and federal agents have sometimes become violent, leading to the use of rubber bullets, tear gas and flash fringes.

The video obtained by Fox News Digital confirmed another violent protest in August, with images showing that the demonstrators deploy a guillotine, lighting fires and fighting with the authorities – forcing the application of the laws to disperse the crowd with ammunition.

Instead of sending troops to protect federal installations, Wilson suggested to the president to send “hundreds of engineers, or teachers or awareness workers” to Portland instead of a “short, expensive and unsuccessful show.

“I am so disappointed with the irresponsibility of the federal government,” he said. “In the end, it can be a show of strength, but that’s it. It is a big show, and after the big show, everyone is coming home. This is what I want to happen today in Portland. We have a long and proud tradition of peaceful protest. We have a long and proud alteration of the track to be in the foreground of positive social change.”

“There are new risks today, risks that we do not yet understand completely,” he continued. “The administration has refused to develop what they mean when they say they will deploy all the strength against our city and our citizens.”

In his announcement on Saturday, Trump did not say that he would deploy all the strength against the city of Portland and his citizens, as Wilson said.

The president said that he would send “all the necessary troops” to protect the city and its ice facilities, authorizing all the force against domestic terrorism “if necessary”.

Portland, a sanctuary city since 2017, has resisted the federal immigration application, making it a focal point during the administration’s immigration application.

In August, the prosecutor General Pam Bondi sent a letter to Wilson, warning the policies of the city’s sanctuary undermined American interests. She demanded that Portland affirmed respect for federal law and end practices that hinder the application of immigration.

The city of Portland did not immediately respond to the request for comments from Fox News Digital.
