The Republicans of the New York Senate urgently urge the Democratic Democrat Kathy Hochul to help the Jewish New Yorkers potentially blocked in Israel in the middle of the Iranian conflict, pointing to the efforts of Florida Ron Desantis to bring residents to Tampa.
Senator of the State Bill Weber, R-Supern, whose district houses one of the largest Jewish populations outside New York, said that many of its voters were still blocked in Israel due to a lack of available flights.
“Florida has found a way to recover their residents. There is no reason why New York State can not do the same,” said Weber, because Desantis facilitated the flights of Cyprus to save Jewish Americans who were able to flee from a reused cruise boat.
“With the news of a ceasefire and a safe flight now possible, there is no reason to delay. Let’s do it together, the governor,” Weber said.

The head of the Senate minority, Rob Ortt, R-Niagara Falls, added that the assistance to New Yorkers currently unable to return home is “primordial”.
“Governor Hochul must take measures to provide safe transport to our New York compatriots in the middle of climbing conflict with Iran,” he said.
The president of the working group on Ortt and the Senate, Jack Martins, R-Nassau, led a separate letter to Hochul by asking him to act and praising Desantis for her own efforts.
“New York’s connection with Israel is unrivaled, as is our responsibility,” said the letter.
“Our state should lead to Israel, support threatened Jewish communities and provide urgent aid to New Yorkers,”. “

“With the Israeli airspace currently closed and the dangerous and uncertain situation on the ground, we urge Governor Hochul to act immediately to bring all New Yorks currently in danger,” said Martins.
“Our commitment to their security reflects our shared unit and resolution values that define us as New Yorkers.”
“The moment to act is now,” added senator Patricia Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick, R-Nassau.
The city of New York has the largest Jewish population of any municipality outside of Israel, and New York State is home to the most Jews from all states – with their number exceeding that of the whole city of Philadelphia.
The letter came the same day as the State Assembly. Zohran Mamdani, D-Astoria, upset the former governor Andrew Cuomo to win the primary of the Democrat mayor of New York.
