Southern Caroline’s Women’s Basketball Coach Dawn Staley said she would have taken the job as head coach from New York Knicks if she had been offered.

Staley, 55, interviewed for the position before the Knicks brought Mike Brown in July.

“I should have done it. Not only for me. For women. To break (this door) open,” said Staley on the “Post Moves” podcast. “I should have done it. These are the New York Knicks. I come from Philly. But these are the New York Knicks.”

Staley was one of the many candidates interviewed by the Knicks for their job as a head coach. The Knicks also interviewed the former coach of Charlotte Hornets James Borrego, the former coach of Memphis Taylor Jenkins Grizzlies and the Timberwolves assistant from Minnesota Micah Nori.

Staley said she thought she had done well in the interview, but wondered if she had injured her chances by asking Knicks how they manage the impact of the hiring of the first NBA head coach.

“How, if you hired me as the first woman’s head coach of the NBA, it would have an impact on your daily work? Because it would be,” said Staley. “You will be asked for questions you don’t have to answer if you are a male coach. There will be the media and all these other things that you have to deal with what you do not have to face and that you do not have to face when you hire a man. It led them to think:” Maybe she is right. “”
