NATO sends a warning to Russia after military drones violated Polish airspace

NATO has issued a severe warning to Russia for violating Polish airspace early Wednesday with drones intended for Ukraine.

“Last night, many Russia drones violated Polish airspace. Our air defenses were activated and managed to defend the NATO territory, as they are designed to do so,” NATO secretary general said Mark Rutte on Wednesday. “The Northern Atlantic Council met this morning and discussed the situation in the light of the request for consultations from Poland under article IV of the Washington Treaty. The allies expressed their solidarity with Poland and denounced the reckless behavior of Russia.”

He added that NATO allies are “determined to intensify their support for Ukraine”, which has been fighting Russia for over three years.

NATO-chief spokesperson Allison Hart said that the 32 national envoys of the Alliance would discuss the issue at a scheduled meeting, according to the Associated Press.

Poland was not the only one to defend its citizens against the Russian assault intended for Ukraine. Other NATO nations have joined the defense of Warsaw Air Space, with several leaders of the Allied countries condemning the attack.

Although Rutte did not mention that the Netherlands joined the fight, Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof confirmed that the Dutch fighter planes F-35 stationed in Poland under NATO also provided support during the air foray.

“Allow me to be clear: the violation of Polish airspace last night by Russian drones is unacceptable. It is still proof that the Russian war of aggression constitutes a threat to European security,” said Schoof in a Dutch language message on X, according to the AP.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy presented the attack calendar in a position on X. He said that the first crossing of a Russian Ukraine drone in Poland was recorded around 12:50 p.m. on Wednesday.

“At least two Russian drones which entered the Polish territory during the night used Belarusian airspace. In total, at least dozens of Russian drones moved along the border of Ukraine and the Belarus and in the Western regions of Ukraine, approaching objectives on Ukrainian territory and, apparently, on Polish territory,” Zelenskyy said.

He added that up to two dozen Russian drones can have entered Polish airspace, although Ukraine works to check the number.

“Ukraine is ready to extend our cooperation with partners for reliable protection from the sky. In order for us not only to have information and intelligence data, but also real joint actions that guarantee neighbors. Russia must think that Europeans can defend themselves,” said Zelenskyy.
