Moroccan man arrested to desecrate the Memorial of the Paris War with cigarettes

France would have stripped the residence permit of a man who lit a cigarette during a war memorial in Paris after being taken in front of the camera.

The Minister of the Interior, Bruno Retailleau, called on Tuesday the actions of a 47 -year -old Moroccan man “indecent and pathetic” after his arrest. Video sequences of him lighting a cigarette under the very visited triumph arc triggered the indignation after its broadcast.

“The man who profaned the tomb of the unknown soldier by lighting a cigarette with the commemorative flame was arrested in Paris for having raped a burial place, a tomb, an urn or a monument erected in memory of the dead. He was placed in police custody and admitted the facts,” wrote the Minister of the Interior Bruno Retailleau on X.

On Wednesday, the French Interior Ministry announced that the unidentified man had been stripped of his residence permit, Politico reported.

The war memorial of the unknown soldier contains a flame and the tomb of a soldier killed during the First World War under an arch of the Arc de Triomphe.

Images of the incident shows that a man on his knees next to the memorial, which seems to be prohibited for visitors. He is seen leaning over the flame emitting from the memorial to light his cigarette before leaving immediately, while the amazed tourists look.

The man would have a legal status in France and was known to the police, according to local reports.

Patricia Mirales, Vice-Minister of Memory and Affairs of Veterans, said that she was “indignant” by what happened.

“Walking on the tomb of the unknown soldier. Lighting his cigarette with the eternal flame. It is not a simple false step: it is a desecration,” she wrote on X. “France will never tolerate the tarnish of the memory of those who died for her.”
