A little more than a week after President Donald Trump unveiled plans to deploy troops from the National Guard of DC and to federalize the Metropolitan Police Department to fight crime to Washington, six states have committed to send their own national guard troops to make the effort.

Now, the troops of the National Guard of Ohio, Virginia-Western, South Carolina, Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee join the repression of the Trump administration in Washington. In total, more than 2,000 national guard troops should participate in the Trump administration efforts to combat crime in the national capital, and around 1,300 have already arrived in Washington.

On Tuesday, around 500 soldiers from the Virginia-Western National Guard are in Washington where they are informed of their mission, an American army official in Fox News said. Once the training is completed, they should join the DC National Guard to “support the mission as it currently exists,” said the official.

On Monday, governors of Mississippi, Tennessee and Louisiana announced that they would also send the troops of the National Guard of their respective states. The Mississippi has promised 200 soldiers, Tennessee said that it would send 160 soldiers and that Louisiana said that it would deploy 135 soldiers.

In addition, Southern Carolina said it would send 200 soldiers, and Ohio said it was planning to deploy 150 to support Trump’s mission.

States said they were responding to requests from the Ministry of the Army to help the DC National Guard.

“The army secretary asked us to send 150 military police officers from the Ohio National Guard to support the District of the Columbia National Guard,” the Ohio Governor Mike Dewine, a republican, said on Saturday. “These members of the Ohio National Guard will perform presence patrols and serve additional security. None of these military police members are currently law enforcement agents in the state of Ohio.”

The White House said that the national guard troops will protect federal assets, will provide a “safe environment” to law enforcement officials and “ensure a visible presence to dissuade crime”.

“President Trump appreciates and welcomes additional help from local officials and the state who wish to join the operation to protect our darling capital from dangerous criminals,” a White House official said on Tuesday in a statement to Fox News Digital. “As part of President Trump’s continuous efforts to make DC sure and beautiful, additional national guard troops can be called to Washington, DC – The role of the National Guard has not changed.”

The Pentagon did not immediately respond to a request for comments from Fox News Digital on the reasons why the troops of the National Guard of other states join the National Guard of DC.

Trump initially floated federalized the Washington Metropolitan Police Department and sent national guard troops to face crime to Washington on August 6, after the assault of a former staff member of the Ministry of Government Effectiveness (DOGE).

A few days later, he announced that he would activate around 800 troops from the National Guard and would take control of the Metropolitan Police Department to fight crime in Washington.

“I am deploying the National Guard to help restore the law, order and public security in Washington, DC,” Trump told journalists at a press conference on August 11. “And they will be allowed to do their job properly.”

While a temporary federal takeover of the Metropolitan Police Department is authorized for emergency situations, Washington officials have put legal action contesting the Trump administration decision on Friday.

“By illegally declaring an MPD takeover, the administration abuses its temporary authority and limited under the law,” wrote the prosecutor general of Washington, DC, Brian Schwalb in a Friday X post. “This is the most serious threat to the domicile rule that DC has ever faced, and we are fighting to stop it.”

Meanwhile, the mayor of Washington, Muriel Bowser, suggested that the Trump administration was not interested in deploying troops to combat crime in the city, but to advance the Trump administration program.

“I think it argues that it is not DC crime,” said Bowser on Sunday. “The emphasis should be placed on violent crimes. … No one focuses on the drop in the level of violence. And therefore, if it is really the application of immigration, the administration should make it clear.”
