Miyares, Sears says that Democrat Jay Jones was “unfit” after violent texts surf

Virginia’s prosecutor general, Jason Miyares, and Lieutenant-Governor WinSome Earle-Sears delivered a dazzling punch this weekend, saying that the candidate of the Democrat AG, Jay Jones, had disqualified his functions after texts emerged in which he wanted the death of the children of a republican rival.

The coordinated convictions have marked the most aggressive climbing to date in a controversy that has launched Virginia’s policy in a fever before the 2025 elections looked at at the national level.

“Jay Jones showed that he was reckless, biased and willing to exchange his integrity,” wrote Miyares in an open letter to Virginians, published on social networks on Saturday evening. “This driving is disqualifying.”

A few hours later, Sears took the scene to make remarks and accused the Democrats of being “consumed of hatred”.

“The enemy is with us, devouring us to Virginia and America today,” said Sears in a fiery speech. “Jay Jones fantasizes about murdered little children lying in life in their mother’s arms. And yet, he presents himself for the Attorney General, our head of the police.”

The tumult followed the publication of private text messages in 2022 in which Jones, then a rising democratic star, said that he hoped that the former republican president of the Todd Gilbert Chamber would die. When he challenged, Jones has doubled, saying that such sorrow could be “a good thing” if it advanced his policy.

Jones has apologized since, calling for “embarrassing and shameful” remarks, and said he had personally contacted Gilbert and his family.

But Virginia Republicans said the damage was irreversible. Miyares, who has been a prosecutor general since 2022, wrote that as a prosecutor, he “seated with victims and mourning families” and heard “the cries of a parent who lost a child”. He said that nobody, “especially a candidate for the best office of the law enforcement of Virginia, should never treat such pain as a political tool”.

The letter from Miyares put the stakes of the race in clear language. “If you believe that it is normal to wish death on a political opponent-vote for my opponent,” he wrote. “If you believe that it is worth the death of children to advance your political goals – vote for my opponent. If you want to give a green light to violent madmen – vote for my opponent.”

The Attorney General said that his own oath forced him to protect each Virginian, “whether democrats or republicans”. He added: “I can’t imagine someone running for this work that advocates violence.”

Sears expanded her criticisms beyond Jones, linking her comments to a culture of what she called the Democratic “rage policy”.

“The management of the Democratic Party encourages violence as a strategy to gain power,” said Sears. She noted that the representative of the candidate for Governor Abigail Spanberger urged his supporters to “let your rage fill you”.

“Well, words have a meaning,” continued Sears. “Rage is defined as violent and uncontrolled anger.” She warned the Virginians to take note, citing threats and attacks against the Republicans nationally, of the 2022 attempt on the life of the Brett Kavanaugh judge to the school shootings targeting Christians.

“The unstable shoots the triggers,” added Sears, “but they are inspired by tolerated hatred and encouraged by the leadership of the Democratic Party.”

The two Republicans designed controversy as a turning point in the 2025 elections.

“Before this week, this race focused on competing opinions on public security,” wrote Miyares. “Now, this is the basic aptitude for the public service.”

Sears closed his speech with a plea for unity and faith: “As immigrant, I saw what happens when the leftists destroy the foundations of freedom.”

“Let each of us act to protect our beloved Commonwealth from Virginia and the gift of God which is the United States of America,” concluded Sears.
