Omar Fateh, a democratic socialist and mayor of Minneapolis, said that his first priority in power would be to protect illegal immigrants from the “hostile federal government of President Donald Trump.

Fateh made the statement during an interview with Kare 11 News in Minnesota, double his identity as a member of the American Democratic Socialists, but denying his policies are “radical”.

“The first day, if you were elected, what would be some of your first two or three priorities for the city?” The journalist asked in an interview broadcast on Friday.

“The first, I would say, would be a hostile federal government, not only Donald Trump in power, but it essentially has a trifecta with the two chambers of the Congress and the Supreme Court. Many of our neighbors, in particular our undocumented residents are very concerned,” replied Fateh.

The candidate continued by saying that public security would be his second priority, but he refused to approve the socialist democratic platform for the fully abolition of the police.

“It will not happen, absolutely,” said Fateh about abolition. “What we are considering is a public security system that works for everyone, and this means that we have a responsible police force and a police force which is an important part of our public security system, but ensuring that when we call 911, we get an appropriate response.”

Fateh argued that half of the 911 calls in Minneapolis “do not need to be answered with armed officers”. He argued that funding should be directed to social workers and other people who can answer these calls in place.

Fateh obtained the approval of the Democratic-Agricole-Lubor Party, the name of the Democratic Party in Minnesota, in July. The party approved it against the outgoing mayor Jacob Frey, also a democrat. Frey presents himself for a third term and decided to stay in the race.

Some have nicknamed Fateh the “Mamdani of Minneapolis”, referring to the candidate for the town hall of New York Zohran Mamdani. Both are the children of immigrants, with Fateh from Somalia and Mamdani from Uganda.

Fateh previously promised that if it were elected mayor, he will increase the minimum wage of the city, will increase the supply of affordable housing and fight what he calls police violence. Similar to Mamdani, Fateh calls to replace some of the functions of the police service with alternatives led by the community. He also wants to issue legal identity documents to undocumented immigrants.
