Minneapolis city councilor Jeremiah Ellison said he will continue to receive his six-digit salary despite a full-time scholarship in Harvard, he announced on Wednesday.

Ellison, the son of the Attorney General of Minnesota, Keith Ellison, is now confronted with his other members of the Council, who note that he will not be able to attend meetings and fully play his role. Ellison is currently receiving a salary of around $ 110,000 for her role in the Council, and her purse at Harvard is a paid position.

“I am extremely disappointed with this, and I hope that my colleagues do not allow it to happen – something that happens to North Minneapolis which is not good for them once again,” said the member of the Council Latrisha Vetaw at a press conference last month.

“Without the member of the Ellison council sitting on these committees, we have no representation of North Minneapolis on these committees. It is not acceptable to the other member of the North Side council here,” she added.

Ellison said he would return twice a month to attend complete meetings of the municipal council and also attend his assigned committee meetings, according to KSTP.

The rules of the council require that members must be physically present both to attend meetings and vote.

“I would like to know if there are other employees who have this privilege,” the member of the Council Linea Palmisano told KSTP. “And, perhaps, I don’t think they would never have allowed this kind of paid leave.”
