An Australian surfer died on Saturday after being bitten by a “big shark” at Long Reef Beach in Sydney, police announced.
Southern New Wales Superintendent John Duncan identified the victim as a 57-year-old father and “experienced surfer” who lost several members Sky News.
“There was a guy who shouted:” I don’t want to be bitten, I don’t want to be bitten, don’t bite myself “, and I saw the shark’s dorsal fin, and it was huge,” said a witness to Sky News Australia.
Police said they were called to the beach around 10 am, local time on Saturday to respond to the reports of a man who “had suffered critical injuries”.

“It was recovered from surfing and brought to the shore; however, (he) died on the scene,” said the South Wales police in a statement.
“The officers attached to the command of the northern beaches police area closed the beach and ensure the affair with experts … to determine the species of shark involved,” added the police. “Two sections of a surfboard were recovered and taken for an expert exam.”
The last time a person was killed by a shark in Sydney, it was in February 2022, which was the first deadly shark attack in the city dating from 1963, according to Sky News.
Duncan told journalists on Saturday that the incident was a “terrible tragedy”.

“The gentleman was released around 9:30 am this morning with some of his friends, about five or six of his comrades,” he was quoted by Sky News. “It is an experienced surfer that we understand.”
“Unfortunately, it would seem that a big one, what we believe to be a shark, attacked him. And consequently, he lost a certain number of members,” added Duncan. “His colleagues managed to return to the beach safely, and shortly after, his body was found floating in surfing, and some other people came out and recovered.”

Duncan said the victim left a woman and a young girl, reported Sky News.
