A man died after being sucked in an MRI machine.

The accident occurred on July 16 at the MRI of Nassau Open in Westbury, New York, according to a press release from the police department of the county of Nassau in Long Island.

The agents answered a call at 911 around 4:30 p.m. at the center of MRI, which provides diagnostic radiology services.

“Upon their arrival, the officers were informed that a magnetic resonance imaging room (MRI) entered an unauthorized magnetic resonance imaging room while the scan was underway,” the press release said.

“The male victim wore a large metal chain around his neck, making him attract the machine, which led to a medical episode.”

The man was transported to a local hospital, where he died of his injuries the next day, July 17.

The investigation is underway, according to the police service.

Cancer projections: here are 5 types and critical information to know each

On a web page detailing the advantages and risks of MRIs, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) notes that “the solid and static magnetic field will attract magnetic objects (small items such as keys and mobile phones, large heavy elements such as oxygen tanks and soil pads) and can cause damage to scanner or injury to the patient or to medical professional. Projectiles. ”

“Meticulous screening for people and objects entering the MR environment is essential to ensure that nothing enters the magnet area which can become a projectile.”

For patients with magnetic implants, external devices and accessory medical devices, there is the risk that MRI “gets on magnetic materials” and causes the “adverse movement” of the device, the same source warns.

The FDA also notes that the “undesirable events” linked to MRI analyzes are “very rare”.

On millions of MRIs in the United States each year, the agency receives around 300 adverse event reports – mainly burns and other thermal injuries.

“Other reported problems include injuries of projectile events (objects traced towards the MRI scanner), the crushed and pinch fingers of the patient’s table, patient’s falls and hearing loss or a bell in the ear (tinnitus),” said FDA.

IRM danger zone sign

The only major problem with an MRI machine warned a doctor, is that the magnetic function is never off. “This means that when you approach an MRI machine, it is impossible to be close to him with anything magnetic without this piece of clothing or device being fired in the device,” he said. MRI is a machine that uses a big magnet to produce “very complex images” of the human body, according to Kenneth J. Perry, MD, an emergency medicine doctor in Charleston, in South Carolina.

This can be very useful for capturing images of specific parts of the body, he said, like the spinal cord, the brain or the pregnant abdomen.

“Unlike other imaging methods, such as radiography or computed tomography, it does not use radiation, which means that it is safe for children as well as for pregnant women,” Perry at Fox News Digital.

The only major problem with an MRI machine, warned the doctor, is that the magnetic function is never extinct.

“This means that when you are approaching an MRI machine, it is impossible to be near it with anything magnetic without this piece of clothing or device being pulled in the device,” said Perry.

“This is different from a CT scanner, which only causes radiation when it is on imaging.”

The best way to prevent these types of accidents is to have a “robust MRI protocol”, advised Perry.

“Most hospitals will have different areas integrated into the MRI process. In each area, there is a discussion on devices or clothes that are safe for MRI,” noted the doctor.

In the real machine area, there should not be any magnetic equipment on patients.

“In the end, MRI is a very safe imagery modality which can give very useful and important information to doctors.”

“Respect for these very important protocols will be very useful to prevent major problems,” said Perry.
