The candidate for the New York Democrat Town Hall, Zohran Mandani, faces a renewed examination for his positions in the police following a mass shooting in the office building in the center of Manhattan which left three dead of civilians as well as a police officer.

The shooter was neutralized because more and more information is learned on the alleged shooter, Shane Tamura de Las Vegas.

“My heart is broken to learn the horrible shooting in Midtown and I hold the victims, their families and the NYPD officer in critical condition in my thoughts. Thank for all our first stakeholders on the ground,” Mamdani told X on Monday evening.

New York, New York – July 15: Democratic socialist candidate Zohran Mamdani, who won the Democrat primary for the mayor of New York, speaks for an approval event of the Union DC 37 on July 15, 2025 in New York. A few weeks after Mamdani won the Democrat primary for the mayor, various wealthy interest groups began to mobilize against the 33 -year state assembly. Mamdani has promised to freeze hikes for a year, make free buses and increase taxes on the rich New Yorkers. In the answers, people quickly shared images of June 8, 2020, where Mamdani said “no, we want to finance the police” and a position on November 5, 2020 where he said “the queer liberation means finance the police”.

“We do not need an investigation to know that the NYPD is racist, anti-Queer and a major threat to public security. What we need is #defundthenypd. But your agreement with (the mayor of New York) uses budget tips to keep as many cops as possible.

In December of the same year, he also called for him to be “dismantled”.

“All this misery. Everything for money. In the last budget, the municipal council tried to ensure that the NYPD reduces its extension budget half. They simply refused. There is no negotiation with such a wicked and corrupt institution. Found it. Make it to the cycle of violence,” he wrote.

However, he sang a different melody during a debate by the mayor in his primary.

“I will not finish the police. I will work with the police because I believe that the police have an essential role to play in the public service, public security,” he said.

On the website of his campaign, he calls for the creation of a Ministry of Public Security.

“The police have an essential role to play. But at the moment, we are counting on them to face the failures of our social security net – which prevents them from doing their real work. Thanks to this new municipal agency and a total approach to the government, community security will be prioritized like never before in New York,” said the website.

Other candidates for the town hall also condemned the tragedy to Manhattan on Monday evening, notably the outgoing mayor Eric Adams, himself a former police officer in the city.

“I’m going to go to the hospital to speak with families and relatives involved in this incident,” said Adams in a video.

“Horrified by the shooting in Midtown. I am grateful for the courage of our NYPD and our first stakeholders, and my prayers are with the victims and their families,” published the former governor of New York Andrew Cuomo.

“Midtown Manhattan’s disturbing reports – people from several people have killed, including an officer from the NYPD. Praying for all those affected. Recommending to our first stakeholders who run towards a danger to protect us,” the Republican candidate for town hall Curtis Sliwa wrote.

The mayor’s four -track race is November 4. Adams chose to present himself as an independence after being the Democratic candidate in the last cycle, and Cuomo’s decision to stay in the race after Mamdani defeated him in elementary school in what some considered an upset victory.

Fox News Digital contacted Mamdani’s campaign to comment, but they did not immediately respond
