Little known Nitaznes opioids lead to an increase in overdose deaths at the national level

A little -known opioid which is deadller than Fentanyl has resulted in an increasing number of overdose death in recent years.

Nitaznes, a class of synthetic opioids, were initially developed as analgesic in the 1950s, but were never approved for use due to the high risk of overdose, according to a report by the Inter-American Commission for the Control of Drug Answer (CICAD).

From 2019, the Nitazens (Benzimidazole-Opioids) began to enter the illegal drug market in Europe, where they were reported on almost all continents.

The CICAD report suggests that “the use of Nitaznes is an increasing trend in North America and that availability is probably spreading through the Americas”.

The most common type of Nitazen is isotonitazine (ISO), but at least a dozen others have been identified, the report indicates.

The US Drug Enfurcement Administration (DEA) classifies the ISO as a medication in Annex 1, as well as seven other Nitazens.

“Nitaznes are produced in illicit laboratories abroad, mainly in places like China and India, and are going up in the United States via the same channels used for fentanyl,” said Corey Gamberg, an alcohol and alcohol advisor with Approved Massachusetts Center for Addiction, Fox News Digital.

Because they are synthetic and inexpensive to make, they have become a popular option for illegal manufacturers, noted the expert.

“While the authorities retract fentanyl, traffickers rotate new synthetic opioids like Nitazens to get around the application,” continued Gamberg.

“These drugs are cheap to do and easy to move. It is a model that we have seen before, and it repeats itself.”

Nitaznes are available in pills, powders, sprays and other forms. They can be sniffed, smoked, injected or taken orally.

The greatest risk is power, because certain types of Nitaznes are several times stronger than fentanyl.

Dr. Jonathan Avery, vice-president of drug addiction psychiatry in NewYork-Presbyterian / Weill Cornell Medical Center, confirmed that Nitaznes can be hundreds of times stronger than morphine and up to 10 times more powerful than fentanyl, “even making tiny deadly doses”.

In addition to potentially deadly overdoses, drugs are known to cause dependence, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, disorientation, loss of consciousness, cardiac arrest and convulsions, according to the cicad report.

The other problem is that people generally do not know that they take them.

“Nitazens are often mixed with heroin, pressed pills or even stimulants – so that someone can think that they use one thing and end up taking something completely different,” warned Gamberg. “This unpredictability is what makes them so fatal.”

According to Dr. Ryan Marino, a medical toxicologist at Case Western University, Ohio, added to the danger of Nitazenes, the test is very limited, Dr. Ryan Marino, a medical toxicologist at the Western University case in Cleveland, Ohio.

“Test bands are available that can help people detect things like powdered drugs and pills for the presence of Nitaznes, but more final tests are limited to more advanced toxicology laboratories, and also limited by the cost and the time of execution,” he told Fox News Digital.

Hospital and routine drug screens do not reliably detect Nitaznes, according to Avery.

“The application is difficult because producers constantly modify chemical structures to escape standard laws and tests,” he said.

To avoid deadly overdoses, Avery called for specialized tests and tools to verify quick medication to identify Nitazens in the supply of the street.
