The North Korean dictator Kim Jong One called on Tuesday the rapid accumulation of the nuclear arsenal of his country, reacting to military operations joined by the United States and South Korea.

Kim called the military exercises “obvious expression of their desire to provoke war”, according to the North Korean state media. The United States and South Korea began its annual military exercises, nicknamed Ulchi Freedom Shield, this week and operations will continue sporadically until September.

The North Korean chief argued that the exercises show the intention of the United States and South Korea to “remain the most hostile and conflicting” and that North Korea must therefore “quickly extend” its nuclear arsenal.

“Thanks to this decision, North Korea demonstrates its refusal to accept denuclearization and the desire to irreversibly modernize nuclear weapons,” a analyst in North Korea told Reuters in the Korea of national unification.

The increase in tensions comes only a few days after the South Korean president Lee Jae Myung has announced his intention to end certain military activities along its border with North Korea, as well as to restore a 2018 military agreement with its neighbor.
