A commissioner of the city of Florida said that she was shocked to stand “standing alone” after her colleagues from the most southern municipality voted this week to end an agreement between the police service and the federal immigration authorities.

Key West City Commissioner Lissette Carey told Fox News Digital that she had considered the potential consequences of the separation of agreement 287 (G), which allows police officers to arrest, question and hold illegal immigrants.

“I did my research before the meeting,” said Carey. “I was the only member of the Commission who understood the consequences and respected our state and federal government sufficiently to confirm the law.”

During a 5-1 vote, the Commission voted to cancel the agreement, a decision which occurred in the midst of the repression of the Trump administration against illegal immigration and mass deportation operations nationally.

“I was deeply disturbed by the lack of understanding and contempt for security, security and long-term well-being of our city,” said Carey. “As the first to vote on this subject, I was discouraged – and frankly shocked – to find myself alone by recognizing the importance of maintaining this agreement.”

This decision has already met with the opposition of leaders of the state capital of Tallahassee.

In a letter dated Wednesday from the commissioners, the prosecutor general of Florida, James Uthmeier, said that their vote violates the law of the state and essentially made Key West one “sanctuary. “”

“Florida law unequivocally prohibits the cities of the sanctuary,” wrote Uthmeier while demanding that city leaders are reversed. “The fact of not taking corrective measures will result in the application of all applicable civil and criminal sanctions, including the withdrawal of the post by the governor.”

He added that they could face the elimination of functions if they do not overturn the course.

Carey, whose mother and grandparents arrived in Key West from Cuba in the 1950s, said that she supported legal immigration.

“I am proud of my inheritance and I honor the many contributions that immigrants make to our communities,” she said. “But I also believe in following the law and ensuring public security.”

“Key West is often considered a carefree liberal city, but it also houses conservatives like me who support the application of the law,” added Carey.

Earlier in the week, Governor Ron Desantis said the question was a question to follow the law of the state.

“I think the Attorney General has weighed on this, and I will let him analyze and send them the warnings that must be sent,” said Desantis when the new immigration detention center “Alligator Alcatraz” was opened in the Everglades.

“But the reality is that you are responsible for full participation,” he added. “And you can report virtue and try to make political statements, but the reality is that local governments must respect the Florida law.”

Choosing not to cooperate with the immigration authorities only place residents in these risky municipalities, a White House spokesman for Fox News Digital told.

“Local officials refusing to work with the federal police will not prevent the Trump administration’s mission from withdrawing dangerous and criminal illegal foreigners from the American communities,” said spokesman. “This will only put American citizens living in their jurisdiction in danger. Quickly and effectively deporting violent foreigners makes each American community safer.”

Other cities in Florida have done the opposite. In Miami, the city’s commissioners narrowly voted there in favor last month to allow the police to work with the US immigration and customs (ICE) by entering its own partnership 287 (G).
