Former Lieutenant-Governor of Georgia Geoff Duncan, a Republican who became a democrat, said that he will face President Donald Trump if he wins the election next year as governor in the key state of the southeast battlefield.

Duncan denounced Trump on Tuesday as he declared his candidacy, joining an increasingly crowded area in the primary of the Democratic Party.

“I will resist Trump and his men yes in our state while lowering the costs of day care, health care and housing so that each family of Georgia is in the best position possible,” promised Duncan, launching his campaign.

Duncan, a former health baseball leader and baseball player for minor leagues, served the Georgia legislature for four years before presenting himself and winning the elections as a lieutenant-government in 2018. He decided not to be re-elected in 2022.

After leaving his duties, Duncan – which was a vocal critic of the GOP of Trump’s repeated efforts to reverse his thin electoral defeat like a razor in November 2020 in the battlefield Georgia to former president Joe Biden – worked towards what he said “to cure and rebuild a Republican party which is damaged but not destroyed. “”

Duncan approved Biden in the 2024 presidential race and then supported the president of the time, Kamala Harris, after replacing Biden at the top of the Democrats ticket in 2024. Duncan took the floor in a high -level speech at National Democratic Convention in Chicago last summer.

The Georgia Republican Party expelled it from the GOP earlier this year.

Duncan, in a campaign launch video, highlighted his clashes with Trump, saying that he “had never hesitated to face Trump. So the Republicans of Georgia threw me out of their party. I left anyway”.

“Now, I run for the governor as a proud democrat. To focus on what matters most for the Georgians,” he added.

Duncan joins a primary democratic domain which already includes the former mayor of Atlanta, Keisha launches Bottoms, the former CEO of the county of Dekalb, Mike Thurmond, and the former senator Jason Esteves.

In the Republican primary, Lieutenant-Governor Burt Jones won Trump’s approval while he was fighting the attorney general Chris Carr.

The winner of the general elections of next year will succeed the Governor of the popular term GOP Brian Kemp.

After Duncan changed his party in August, Trump went to social networks to call him “a total loser”.

The president accused that Duncan could “have ever been able to do anything, everything he has ever done was complaining. We no longer wanted him in the Republican Party, so I am told that he became a Democrat. Good GEOFF riddle. You don’t even have any chance !!!”

Asked about criticisms, Duncan said in a digital interview Fox News: “I think he argues for me that the republican party no longer wants to love their neighbor. There is nothing in this tweet or the truth about the social message or anything that shows a kind of attitude of which I want to be part.”

Duncan, targeting Trump, added: “I hope he understands how to manage this country better than now for the next two years. But I am proud of not being a republican, especially with him at the forefront of the spear.”
