House Speaker Mike Johnson, Republican of Los Angeles, announced a global effort to nominate President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, as the first phase of the recent Middle East peace agreement takes effect.
“I am proud to tell you that I and my friend, Speaker Ohana of the Israeli Knesset, the equivalent of our Congress, will embark together on a project to rally the speakers of parliaments around the world to jointly nominate President Donald J. Trump for next year’s Nobel Peace Prize,” Mr. Johnson said Tuesday. “No one has ever deserved this award more, and that is an objective fact.”
He made the announcement during his daily government shutdown news conference on the 14th day of the ongoing budget standoff between Democrats and Republicans.

Johnson opened the news conference by praising Trump for helping secure the deal to end the war between Israel and Hamas.
“There will be more to share about this in the weeks to come, but today marks the start of this effort that we will undertake together, this joint parliamentary project,” he said.
“And I am honored to do so alongside our ally and my Israeli counterpart to lead this effort.”

Trump was in Egypt on Monday for the signing of the historic peace deal alongside other world leaders from Europe, Asia and the Middle East.
Israel and Hamas have also begun taking the first steps in the peace process by releasing people detained by their respective camps. The 20 Israeli hostages still held by Hamas were released, while Israel began releasing Palestinian prisoners it held within its own borders.
Trump received praise from both sides of the aisle for his role in the U.S.-brokered deal.

“I found this remarkable. I saw a video last night of one of the released hostages arguing that as soon as the elections took place in November in the United States, Hamas started treating him and his fellow hostages much better,” Johnson said.
“They fed them better. They respected them more. They changed the tone in which they treated them. They didn’t spit on them anymore. As he said in his own words, elections have consequences.”
