The chief of the Hakeem Jeffries House, DN.Y., admitted Sunday that he had not yet approved Zohran Mamdani for the mayor of New York and faced interrogations on the reasons why he has not yet supported the progressive candidate in his hometown.
Jeffries made his comments to Jonathan Karl on ABC “This Week”, adding that he had spoken with Mamdani on Wednesday to congratulate him for the campaign “which was clearly tirelessly on the high cost of living in New York and the economy”.
When he was asked what prevents him from approving the mayor’s candidate, the house chief of the house said that Mamdani and “did not know each other well”.
“Our districts do not overlap. I have never had a substantial conversation with him”, noting that it is “the next step in terms of this process”.

Mamdani faced controversy over a number of his declarations and positions. The website of the Democratic Socialist includes a housing policy that stipulates that if it were elected, its administration “would pass the tax burden of the owners over-surninated in external districts to more expensive houses in richer and white districts”.
He also faced a meticulous examination of anti-Israeli posts, such as the support of the movement “boycott, disinvestment and sanctions” targeting the Jewish state. He also said that if he was elected mayor, he would have arrested Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he visits the city.

Despite this, Mamdani came out in the lead during the primary of the democratic mayor last week, beating rivals such as former governor Andrew Cuomo. During the general elections, he should face the Republican Curtis Sliwa and the outgoing mayor Eric Adams, who presents himself as independent.
