Israel has a 40% control of Gaza City while Israeli defense forces are now preparing to seize the whole region, an Israeli military spokesman confirmed on Thursday.

Brig. General Effie Defrin told journalists at a press conference that his forces had already secured large districts in his last offensive.

“We continue to harm Hamas infrastructure,” he said before adding: “Today we hold 40% of the territory of Gaza City.”

“We will continue to operate until all the objectives of the war are achieved. First and foremost, the return of the hostages and the dismantling of the rule of Hamas,” he added.

Last week, Israel said Gaza City in the North a combat area, with certain designated districts of the red areas, urging the Palestinians to leave.

High officials have warned that the military regime could be imposed and that the Palestinians were invited to evacuate south, some of the coalition partners of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu growing for a permanent Israeli colony in Gaza.

Meanwhile, Gaza health officials said that at least 53 Palestinians were killed on Thursday, most of them in the city of Gaza, while Israeli forces were rushing deeper in the east suburbs.

The residents reported heavy bombing in Zeitoun, Sabra, Tuffah and Shejaia while the tanks moved to Sheikh Radwan, northwest of the city center, crushing the houses and fixing fires in the camps.

Mahmoud Bassal, spokesperson for the Civil Emergency Service in Gaza, said the bombing had destroyed four buildings in what he described as a “fire belt” targeting civilians.

“Even if Israel issues warnings, there are no places that can welcome people,” he said.

During the evacuations, Israeli officials say that 70,000 people have fled the city of Gaza so far, although the Palestinian authorities argue that much less have left, with tens of thousands of people still on the path of advanced forces.

Israel launched its main offensive from Gaza City on August 10 under “Operation Gideon’s Chariots”, deployment of tens of thousands of reservists to fight with its regular troops.

There are still 48 hostages that would take place in Gaza.

Netanyahu initially declared that Israel would conquer all Gaza after indirect interviews with Hamas on a cease-fire and hostage release contract were broken in July.
