Illinois governor JB Pritzker, a democrat, said that there was no emergency and that President Donald Trump “tries to make a crisis” after reporting that the federal government could deploy the National Guard to Chicago to fight crime in the city.

“The state of Illinois at present has not received any requests or awareness of the federal government asking if we need help, and we have not made any request for federal intervention,” the governor said in a statement on Saturday.

It comes after Trump’s decision to strengthen the presence of federal police in Washington, DC, to try to reduce crime. Hundreds of federal agents and troops of the National Guard were deployed in the streets of DC in the context of the federal takeover of the district.

Now Trump says Chicago could be the next target of his administration for federal repression against crime.

The Pentagon planned a military deployment in Chicago for weeks, which could include the mobilization of a few thousand troops from the National Guard next month, according to the Washington Post.

“The safety of the inhabitants of Illinois is always my absolute priority,” said Pritzker. “There is no emergency that justifies the President of the United States federating the Illinois National Guard, the deployment of the National Guard of other states or military dispatch in active service within our own borders.”

The governor also accused Trump of “trying to make a crisis, to politicize the Americans who serve in uniform and to continue to abuse his power to distract the pain he causes families of workers”.

“We will continue to follow the law, defend the sovereignty of our state and protect the people from Illinois,” he continued.

Lieutenant-Democrat, Lieutenant-Governor Juliana Stratton, said that the report that Trump is preparing to deploy federal troops in Chicago “proves what we all know: he is ready to go entirely possible to create chaos if that means more political power-no importance that is injured.”

“As Lieutenant Governor and throughout my career, I fought fervently for the reform of our criminal legal system and as part of the Pritzker-Straton administration, we have made enormous progress,” she said in a statement. “The crime in Chicago is decreasing and there is absolutely no justification for this decision, apart from the pain of the pain that Trump inflicts families working with his dangerous program.”

“Illinois, Governor Pritzker and I are here to defend your rights, your freedoms and will protect you against the storms of hatred and the fear that arrives at us,” she added.

The mayor of Chicago, Brandon Johnson, also a democrat, said earlier that “the illegal deployment of the National Guard in Chicago has the potential to inflate tensions between residents and the police when we know that confidence between the police and residents is fundamental to building safer communities.”

“An illegal deployment of the (National Guard) would be unbearable and would threaten the historical progress we have made,” Johnson said in a statement on Friday.

The mayor has also cited data showing that homicides, flights and shots have dropped considerably in the past year.
