The fighter planes intercepted at least three planes on Sunday, which violated the airspace of the temporary flight restriction (TFR) on Bedminster, New Jersey, where President Trump spent the holiday weekend, according to the North American Aerospace Defense Command (Norad).
With a plane intercepted in the morning, and two others being intercepted later during the day, Norad said that there were a total of 11 incursions of unauthorized aircraft in the TFR airspace during the weekend.
Around 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, a civilian plane violated the TFR and was escorted safely outside the region by a Norad plane.
“Norad and the (Federal Aviation Administration) aim to ensure the safety of the sky above America, with particular attention to areas with temporary flight restrictions (TFR) to ensure flight security, national security and security of the president,” said General Gregory Guillot, Commander, Norad and US Northern Command. “TFR procedures are compulsory, and the excessive number of TFR violations this weekend indicates that some civil aviators are not a reading notice to airmen, or in Notem, before each flight as required by FAA.”

“If the pilot of an aircraft is at the interception by combatants or helicopters, they should immediately appear on frequency 121.5 or 243.0 and turn to reverse the course until receiving additional instructions on one of these frequencies,” added Guillot.
In another case, on Saturday, an airplane was escorted safely outside the TFR airspace just before 2:40 p.m., after a standard “Headbutt” maneuver was used to attract the attention of the pilot.

The maneuver involves a military jet flying directly in front of a civilian plane at a narrow but safe distance to visually point out the pilot to follow or change course.
Officials have warned private pilots to do their homework before takeoff.

“It is extremely important for the safety of North American flights that the violations of the temporary flight restriction (TFR) are avoided,” said Norad in a message to the pilots. “All pilots must familiarize themselves with the updates of the limited airspace, including the examination of the NOTAMs of the new and existing FAA (opinion) which have an impact on their flight plans and their activities. Adhering to the protocols of restricted aerial space of the FAA is compulsory, whatever the geographic region, the cell or the air rate.”
