Historical funicular derails in Lisbon killing 15 in a tragic accident

The history of Lisbon Glória Funicular derailed during peak hours on September 3, killing at least 15 people and injuring 18. A child is among the injured.
The cable -fired tram that transported residents and tourists from generations has come out of the tracks before crashing into a neighboring building.
According to AP NewsThe first reports suggest that a loose cable may have caused the derailment. The Glória Funicular, in service since 1885 and recognized as one of the most emblematic monuments of Lisbon, was filled with commuters and tourists when the accident occurred.
The emergency services arrived in a few minutes, dealing with the injured on the scene and transporting others to local hospitals.

Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa expressed condolences to the families of the victims and promised full transparency in the official investigation, saying: “It is a tragedy of the same thing that we have never seen”.
The authorities have launched an investigation into mechanical failure, the local media citing concerns about recent maintenance calendars.
AP News added that the Glória Funicular has long been a drawing of tourism, connecting the city center of Lisbon to the Bairro Alto district and welcoming thousands of visitors each year.

The Portuguese government said a national day of mourning to honor the victims, claiming “a tragic accident … caused the irreparable loss of human life, which has gone in mourning their families and dismayed the whole country”.
