A new book at the end of the presidential campaign of Joe Biden and the birth of Kamala Harris highlights the process behind the vice-president choosing the governor of Minnesota, Tim Walz, like his running mate, a decision widely crossed by the experts retrospectively.
“2024: How Trump took over the White House and the Lost America Democrats”, published Tuesday by Josh Dawsey journalists of the Wall Street Journal, Tyler Pager of the New York Times and Isaac Arnsdor of the Washington Post, described a process of verification which was reduced to three finalists: Walz, Pennsylvania Gov.josh Shapiro and Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly.
The three candidates made a final interview with Harris at his residence, explains the book, adding that when he was asked what they wanted to drink, Shapiro and Kelly chose water while Walz chose Diet Mountain Dew.
The call with rural voters was an absolute priority for the Harris ticket and the book declares that Harris advisers estimated that Walz was the best candidate to do so.

“Pelosi also pushed private for him because she had worked with him at the Congress,” said the book about the former president of the Chamber. “Walz’s field was simple: it could call on white voters through the States of the Blue Wall (Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania) and, hopefully, help Harris with male voters. He had never lost the elections.”
While most political experts felt that Shapiro, governor of a swing key, was the most logical choice, the book declares that the interview with Harris and Shapiro “revealed that the two were not a perfect match.”
“He appeared to be too ambitious, pushing Harris to define what would be his role. He also admitted that he would not be natural for him to serve as a number two of someone, leaving Harris with a bad impression,” said the book.
Conversely, the authors explain that Walz was “proceedings” while “showing no interest in him” and “categorically denied any interest in presenting himself to the presidency”.

“He went so far as to volunteer volunteer for which she might not want to choose it,” said the book. “In his interview until Friday, he said that he had never used to telected before. On Sunday, he said to Harris:” I would understand that if you were going with someone else because I am really nervous about the debate, and I don’t think I will do well. “However, the verification team did not fully appreciate its tendency to ill -hope, its folksicity sometimes going to factual imprecision.”
Walz would ultimately attract an in -depth examination on the campaign track for its “folkness” with a series of blunders, including its characterization of its military service and an assertion that it was present at the massacre of Place Tiananmen.
The book says that Harris “had trouble” to decide between Shapiro and Walz, believing that she had a better “relationship” with Walz but understood the importance of Pennsylvania. The Harris team, according to the book, told him that the survey had not offered a clear response to which of the two candidates would help the ticket.
“There was no empirical evidence that Shapiro would deliver the Pennsylvania and with her the White House,” said the book.
While Shapiro was considered, many experts hypothesized that his solid support for Israel could be a problem given the progressive wing of the Democratic Party being pro-Palestinian, causing demonstrations, sometimes violent, across the country after October 7.
The book said that the Harris campaign was aware of this issue.
“A large part of the progressive wing of the Democratic Party declared war on Shapiro, largely because of its support for Israel,” said the book. “Some Shapiro allies have considered criticisms to be deeply unjust and anti-Semitic limits, because the governor was an observer Jew, but his posts on the Palestinian conflict largely aligned with the Biden administration and the other vice-presidents.
“The one who caught their attention was his comment on April CNN:” We have to ask whether we would tolerate this or not, if they are dressed in KKK outfits or KKK insignia, comments on African-American people in our communities. “”

In the end, the book says that Harris “went with his instinct” and chose Walz believing that he was “better adjusted” in a decision that his staff was “unanimously late”.
Fox News Digital contacted Walz’s office and Shapiro’s office refused to comment.
After losing all the states of the battlefield and finally the presidency against Donald Trump, the criticisms quickly judged Walz’s choice as a misstep by Harris.

“Walz’s choice was only one of the many disastrous but symptomatic errors of a larger problem – the management of the Democratic Party is too afraid to say no to the progressive wing to the left of the party,” said Julian Epstein, a long -standing democratic agent and former chief lawyer of the Chamber’s judicial committee, in Fox News Digital, shortly after the elections.
Rob Bluey, president and editor -in -chief of The Daily Signal, told Fox News Digital in November that Harris Chicking Walz “turned out to be a disastrous decision that had condemned Kamala Harris from the moment she took him.”
“Not only was Walz badly prepared for national spotlights and a meticulous media exam, but Harris has passed several best options,” said Bluey. “Since the little Americans knew Harris or his political positions, they were right to question his judgment on this great decision.”
