German researchers recently announced the discovery of 31 shipwrecks, including a possible steam destroyed during an air raid in the Second World War.
The shipwrecks were found in Lake Constance German as part of the “Wrecks and Deep Sea” project. Since the launch of the project in 2022, divers and remote vehicles exploited (ROVS) have identified more than 250 potential submarine anomalies, according to a press release Tuesday from the State Office for the preservation of the monument.

Of the 186 anomalies studied so far, 31 have been confirmed as shipwrecks – ranging from historic objects to modern sports boats. The other 155 anomalies found themselves to be natural training such as plant growth or artificial items such as fishing equipment, as indicated in the press release.

Among the discoveries, there were two large metal ship shells. Due to their location and their size, researchers think they could be the Paddle Steamers SD Friedrichshafen II and SD Baden shells, the press release noted.

The SD Friedrichshafen II was destroyed during an air raid during the Second World War, while the SD Baden was put out of service in 1930 and finally sunk, according to The Arkeonews media.

“The wrecks are much more than lost vehicles – these are real time capsules that preserve the stories and crafts of a long time ago,” said Alexandra Ulisch, project research partner, in a press release.

The researchers also found an almost completely preserved freight sailboat, which had its mast and its court always intact. The place of rest of the ship deeply underwater has helped preserve the key characteristics, such as arc pliers and insurance pins, limiting the growth of invasive quagga mussels, as indicated in the press release.

On another site with largely dispersed debris, the researchers found at least 17 wooden barrels, according to the press release.
The project will continue until the summer of 2027.

Earlier this year, a vintage car was discovered during a similar submarine excavation from USS Yorktown in the Pacific Ocean, according to the National oceanic and atmospheric administration (NOAA).
