George W. Bush calls the Walker Cup one of the “biggest sporting events”

Pebble Beach, California – While the waves of the Pacific Ocean overwritten on the shore rightly, former president George W. Bush offered his best wishes to the competitors of the Walker Cup this weekend.

“I love the Walker Cup. I think this is one of the major sporting events -” said Bush at the opening ceremony on Friday.

The Cypress Point Assembly golf club – at least in the afternoon – is the host of this year. It’s just the coastline of the Monterey peninsula more famous golf ties of Pebble Beach. But this route is venerated by golf aficionados for its holes along and above the ocean and its use of adjacent sandy dunes and cypress pines Craggly elsewhere on the property.

Contested for the first time in 1922 is the 50th time that the best male amateur golfers in the United States will compete with their counterparts in Britain and Ireland in a competition appointed for the great-grandfather of the former president.

“You know, Gh Walker had many children who then had many children,” said Bush about the connection of his family with this event. “And many of them are there and probably wonder how I’m the guy who can speak to the Walker Cup and they don’t. My answer is managed for the president.”

During its history, some of the best in the game participated in the Walker Cup before going to greater glory, including Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Rory McILroy and Scottie Scheffler. Time will only say if one of the 20 competitors of this year – most of whom are at university – will join this illustrious group.

On the floor at home and on a sequence of victories of four games, the American team, at least on paper, seems to have the advantage. The six best amateur players classified in the world, including the first Jackson Koivun from Auburn University, are on the American team.

“This is one of the best golf courses I have ever played,” Koivun said on Thursday. “I had the chance to play my first year of university here, and just to come back, play in the Walker Cup here, the golf course is in great shape. You think so much around this place. It is really one of the special points of the golf.”

Of the ten American players, four racks from Texas.

The best classified player (# 10) by GB & I is Tyler Weaver from England, who plays his university golf course at the Florida State University.

“I don’t think the classification means too much during an event like this,” said Weaver. “Obviously, they also have very high players, but our team is also great, and the classification in the end does not mean too much.”

But the player who makes the most noise during training tours this week is Luke Poulter, who made four eagles, including his very first AS.

“(Thursday) was pretty cool by exploding on the first hole, then two holes later by obtaining my first hole in one, so it was quite special,” said Poulter, son of the participant at seven times Ryder Cup, Ian Poulter. “The game is good. (The course) is in an incredible condition, so no complaint about it. I feel really good, comfortable and ready to start this match.”

The two -day competition ends on Sunday.
