The general of the military Michael “Erik” Kurilla is no stranger to conflicts, in particular in the Middle East.
Two decades ago as a lieutenant-colonel, he was on the front line of combat against the insurgents in Mosul, Iraq, while leading the 1st battalion, 24th Infantry Regiment. The battalion mission was to carry out security patrols and coordinate offensive attacks against anti-Iraqi insurgents targeting the Iraqi security forces and Iraqi police stations.
During Kurilla’s mandate leading the battalion, more than 150 soldiers won the Heart purple for injuries and the battalion lost at least a dozen soldiers, reported the New York Times in August 2005.
“There will always be someone who wants () to take an AK-47 and shoot Americans,” Kurilla told New York Times in August 2005.

Kurilla did not finish this unscathed deployment. Later, in August 2005, Kurilla found herself taken in a fight against Mosul, Iraq, in terms of shooting, where he underwent several ball injuries, which earned him a bronze star with a value and one of his two purple heart prices.
Now, Kurilla is facing another battle as commander of the American central command, or Centcom, serving as a first military officer supervising the American military forces based in the Middle East.
This means that Kurilla, who attended the West Point US military academy, is at the forefront of military operations when President Donald Trump plans to engage in military strikes against Iranian nuclear sites.

Centcom is one of the 11 combat commandments of American soldiers and includes 21 nations in the Middle East in its area of operations, including Iraq and Afghanistan.
Those who know Kurilla claim that he is the perfect person for work, and the defense secretary Pete Hegseth described Kurilla as an edifying leader.
“General Kurilla is a daring, dynamic and inspiring leader who strikes fear in the hearts of American enemies,” Hegseth said in a statement on Thursday at Fox News Digital. “It is a warrior from start to finish who always puts his country, his mission and his troops first. It was an honor to serve by his side to defend our great nation.”
The retirement general of the army Mark Many, the former president of the joint staff chiefs, said in 2022 when Biden appointed Kurilla for the role that Kurilla is the ideal Centcom chief.
“If there was a way to feed a machine, the requirements of the perfect leader of Centcom – the character traits, the attributes, the experiences, the knowledge and the personality that would be ideal – this machine would spit Erik Kurilla,” Milley said in 2022, according to the Department of Defense. “Erik has a vast experience in combat (and) on the staff.
“He is a visionary, he is a thinker and he is a office,” said Many. “He understands both the physical and human terrain and is able to identify the deep causes of the problems and develop systems. He is not at all a linear thinker. He is actually a very good problem of problems.”

The general of the retired Marine Corps, Frank McKenzie, the predecessor of Centcom de Kurilla, expressed similar feelings.
“I cannot think of anyone better qualified to direct the next Chapter of Centcom than Erik Kurilla,” said McKenzie in 2022, according to the Pentagon. “He is no stranger to Centcom (field of operations). He is not foreign to the headquarters.”
Notable figures that previously held the Centcom position include former defense secretaries, retired general Jim Mattis, who served during Trump’s first mandate, and retired general Lloyd Austin, who served during the administration of former president Joe Biden.
Fox News Digital contacted Centcom, McKenzie and Manyy to comment and did not receive an answer at the time of publication.
The region is a familiar territory for Kurilla. The general spent a decade between 2004 and 2014 to supervise the conventional and special operations forces during consecutive visits to the Middle East which are noted from Centcom.
Trump would reinstate the “maximum pressure” campaign against Iran
In addition, Kurilla held key staff positions of Centcom and Management, notably as a chief of staff of the command from August 2018 to September 2019. Before directing Centcom, the general also ordered the 2nd Battalion Ranger, the 75th Ranger Regiment, the 82nd air division and the XVIII Airborne Corps, according to his official bio.
In addition to deploying in Iraq as part of Operation Iraki Freedom and Operation inherent Resolve, he deployed in Afghanistan with the Entring Freedom operation. The other prices he won include the combat index badge, awarded to the infantry of the army or to the special forces officers who encountered an active ground combat.
Kurilla, which the Senate confirmed to lead one HentCom in February 2022 and left the role later in 2025, told legislators of the House armed services committee until June 10 since October 2023, when Hamas attacked Israel for the first time, the American soldiers faced increased threats in the region.
More specifically, he said, American troops were under the direct fire of nearly 400 unmanned air systems, 350 rockets, 50 ballistic missiles and 30 cruise missiles launched by groups supported by Iran.

He said that Centcom had met the “most kinetic period at any other time in the last decade”.
“We have been on several occasions on the verge of regional war with the first state attacks on the State between Iran and Israel in their history,” Kurilla told legislators. “In the Red Sea, the Houthi try to kill the Americans operating in the Red Sea required an aggressive response to protect our sailors and restore freedom of navigation. It is then that Tehran continues to progress to a nuclear weapons program – threatening catastrophic ramifications in the region and beyond.”

Consequently, Kurilla said that Centcom was ready to use military force to prevent Iran from becoming a state with nuclear arms. Kurilla said that he had provided Trump and defense secretary Pete Hegseth a multitude of options to be used to eliminate the threat from a nuclear Iran.
Since Kurilla’s testimony, tensions have increased even more in the Middle East after Israel has launched massive air strikes against Iranian nuclear sites which, according to Israel, have killed several high-ranking military leaders. Likewise, Iran has also launched strikes against Israel while the two military campaigns accelerate against each other.
Trump is still sailing if the United States will make direct strikes against Iran. Trump told journalists that he could order strikes targeting Iranian nuclear sites and that “next week will be very large”.
“Yes, I can do it. I may not be doing it. I mean, nobody knows what I’m going to do,” said Trump. “I can tell you this, that Iran has a lot of problems and that they want to negotiate.”
