The legislator says that Russian energy production remains “important” for Ukraine

A republican of the upper chamber argues that the sanction of Russia would be the key to neutralize one of the greatest challenges that Ukraine is confronted as it fights for its sovereignty.

The push of the representative Mike Turner, R-Ohio, the former president of the intelligence committee of the Chamber, intervenes that the Congress struggles with legislation which would extend the sanctions and slam prices on the countries buying Russian energy. Supporters say that the measures are late to undermine the economy of the Russian war, while skeptics warn that they could locate American alliances and world markets.

“With the right support, Ukraine could succeed and the assault of Russia could be defeated,” said Turner on Thursday, who recently returned from a bipartite trip to Ukraine.

“In the presentations I have received, there is no doubt that the most important challenge in this conflict is Russia’s ability to continue its industrial production.”

He added that military assistance and other that Russia obtains from China, Iran and North Korea also maintains Moscow afloat.

“We must have an impact on their production capacity. It is not only their capacity for production, but even projections in the future,” said Turner. “Right now, their economic engine is feeding their war engine.”

Russia launched a large -scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Russian president Vladimir Putin thought kyiv would fall in a few days. However, this estimate has long been broken and the two countries have since entered into the bloodiest earthly war in Europe since the Second World War.

Moscow troops have since taken over certain parts of the donbas in eastern Ukraine and have organized the territory of Crimea in Ukraine since 2014.

President Donald Trump, who met leaders on both sides, gave kyiv a vote of enthusiastic trust earlier this week after talking to the United Nations General Assembly.

“After having learned to know and understand the military and economic situation of Ukraine / Russia and, after having seen the economic problems it causes Russia, I think that Ukraine, with the support of the European Union, is able to fight and win all of Ukraine in its original form,” he posted on Truth Social.

“Over time, the patience and financial support of Europe and, in particular, NATO, the borders of origin from where this war started, is an option. Why not? Russia has been fighting for three and a half years a war which should have taken a real military power less than a week to win.”

Asked at some point about the Ukrainian assessment of Russia’s offensive last summer, Turner said that the front lines had moved very little.

“The Russian victims, daily, are enormous. And it is to disturb. The production of weapons by Russia is the only difference which allows this attack to continue,” he said. “Russia’s economy to continue selling oil and energy floating their ability to pursue this assault against Ukraine.”

China was the world’s largest client of Russia fossil fuels in August 2025, followed by India and Turkey, according to the Energy research center and clean air.

And while a large part of Europe has greatly reduced its dependence on Russian energy, it is still based on Moscow for certain supplies, according to the New York Times.

The United States has already inflicted a wide range of sanctions against Russian entities, imports and individuals since the start of the war.

But the legislation led by Senator Lindsey Graham, Rs.C., and the representative Brian Fitzpatrick, R-P-P., Would have further discretion to perceive more sanctions and heavy prices on countries that import Russian energy, among other measures.

President Mike Johnson, R-La., said in a recent interview on “Face The Nation” of CBS News that he supported the sanction of Russia, although he did not approve the bill specifically.

“I think the appropriate sanctions against Russia are far away.

When asked by Fox News Digital if he thought that Congress could act without the green light from Trump, however, Turner said: “I do not think the president said there was a red light on the progress of the sanctions.”

Fox News Digital contacted the White House for the President’s thoughts but did not hear at the time of the press.
