Eight passengers saved from the boat to flow in rough waters off Miami-Dade

A day on the water turned into a spectacular rescue Saturday while the boaters were saved from agitated seas off the coast of Florida.
The American Coast Guard (USGC), as well as the local fire service, responded to a distress call at 1:42 p.m. in the county of Miami-Dade. A 20-foot boat with eight people on board asked for help when they were low in fuel and taking water at sea, according to an Instagram post of Miami-Dade Fire Rescue (MDFR).

The fire service deployed a crew on firefighters 21 to around 10 miles offshore, capturing the rescue in dramatic images in real time.

“MDFR reminds those who plan to go for pleasure navigation to always check the weather conditions before leaving on the water, to file a floating plan and to have a VHF radio in the channel 16 to report aid in an emergency”, reads the Instagram publication.

In 2023, there were 3,844 incidents involving 564 deaths due to recreational navigation incidents, according to the USGC.
The USGC recommends that boaters check the weather, inflated and tidal conditions before departure and in progress.

Boaters must also ensure that they have life jackets approved by the Coast Guard and a very high frequency naval (VHF) at hand, and should not drink alcohol during the operating of the boat.
