Several suspects have been arrested in connection with the theft of the crown jewels from the Louvre Museum in Paris last weekend, French officials announced on Sunday.
Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau said investigators made the arrests on Saturday evening, including a man taken into police custody as he prepared to leave the country from Charles de Gaulle airport.
Beccuau did not confirm the number of arrests, although French media BFM TV and newspaper Le Parisien earlier reported that two suspects had been arrested and taken into custody.
The thieves took less than eight minutes to steal jewelry worth 88 million euros ($102 million), a heist that sparked a national reckoning and shocked the world.

The team of thieves used a freight elevator to scale the facade of the Louvre, forced open a window, smashed display cases and fled, according to French authorities. The director of the Louvre, Laurence des Cars, admitted that there had been a “terrible failure” in the museum’s security.
The thieves made off with a total of eight items, including a sapphire tiara, a necklace and a unique earring from a set linked to 19th-century queens Marie-Amélie and Hortense. They also stole an emerald necklace and earrings linked to Empress Marie-Louise, Napoleon Bonaparte’s second wife, as well as a reliquary brooch. Empress Eugenie’s diamond tiara and large corsage-shaped brooch – an imperial ensemble of rare craftsmanship – were also part of the loot.
Eugenie’s emerald-set imperial crown made of more than 1,300 diamonds was later found outside the museum, damaged but salvageable.
