Former governor Andrew Cuomo seemed to joke on Saturday when he said he would move to Florida if deputy Zohran Mamdani won the mayor of New York mayor.

Cuomo lost Mamdani in the Democrat primary, but plans to challenge him as independent in the general elections. The line, delivered during a Hampton breakfast with political initiates, triggered laughter but also highlighted an increasing discomfort in the political direction of the city.

“It’s all or nothing. We win or even move to Florida. God does not like it,” said Cuomo, according to the participants during the event.

The remark occurred during a private rally organized by the businessman John Catsimatidis at the 75 -hand in Southampton. Catsimatidis, donor of the GOP and radio host, is also the owner of the Gristedes and Agostino supermarket channels, which could be directly affected by Mamdani’s proposal to create grocery stores managed by the government.

The list of guests included the president of RXR Realty, Bruce Mosler, the ambassador George Tsunis and the old high level of Cuomo Help Melissa Derosa. A participant described the line as a “wow” moment. Several guests said it had attracted the attention of the play.

Cuomo’s main advisor, Rich Azzopardi, defended the comment at New York Post.

“Governor Cuomo would never give up in New York,” he said. “The line highlighted the challenges of this election and the risk of electing a 33 -year -old socialist dangerously inexperienced and hateful to lead the city.”

Cuomo repeatedly called Mamdani as “The Kid” during the event. He called the Mamdani’s rent proposal for a “death sentence” for the owners and the supply of housing, and rejected his platform as “slogans of stickers for unrealistic bumper”.

The Mamdani campaign did not respond to a request for comments.

Cuomo also targeted the mayor Eric Adams, who also presents himself as an independent, saying: “We have no competent mayor since Bloomberg.” He accused Adams not to be able to concentrate, citing in progress surveys and ethical problems.

Asked about the New York Post criticisms, Adams replied: “If it is serious to move to Florida, he should go ahead. He has already spent three weekends in Hamptons.”
