The legislators of the Chamber and the Senate return to Washington of their laws at home to deal with a litany of critical battles in the coming weeks.
Tuesday marked the end of the annual recess of the congress in August, and the legislators are respected as soon as possible, ranging from the abolition of a partial closure of the government to possibly extend the grip of President Donald Trump to the DC police forces.

Government financing
The Chamber and the Senate will overlap for only 14 days between Tuesday and the government’s deadline for financing of September 30, and no agreement has yet been concluded on the financial expenditure priorities (FY) 2026.
It is likely that an extension of stopgap of the financing levels of the financial year 2025 – called a continuous resolution (CR) – will be necessary to avoid a closure, which could have politically harmful consequences for the Republicans while they control both the Congress and the White House.
The Democrats, dissatisfied with republican efforts to cancel the appropriate prior funds via the former termination process, reported that they are ready to play Hardball.
Any financing bill will have to go through the threshold of the Senate, which means that the head of the majority of the Senate, John Thune, Rs.d., can only lose a handful of votes. The leader of the Senate minority, Chuck Schumer, Dn.y., still calls a bipartite process, but confidence in the thin alley.
On Friday, an official of the White House told journalists that he thought that CR Clean, which means without any change or attachment of runners, would put the Democrats in a difficult position and that the rejection of it would blame a closure on the left.
The Republicans themselves will however have a precious place for error. Two special elections in safe blue seats by September 30 are ready to reduce the majority of the GOP house from three seats to two.

Epstein files
A bipartite effort to force a voting on the scale of the Chamber on the publication of the files of the Ministry of Justice (DoJ) on Jeffrey Epstein should transfer fully this week, even if the Doj has already agreed to hand over a tranche of files to the Chamber’s supervisory committee.
The representatives Thomas Massie, R-ky., And Ro Khanna, D-Calif., Direct what is called a discharge petition, a mechanism to force a vote on the legislation on the wishes of the leaders of the Chamber. It is if the petition obtains the majority of the signatures of the legislators of the Chamber.
President Mike Johnson, R-La., Publicly condemned the effort in July, rejecting liberation petitions as a tool in the minority party and claiming that all Republicans were favorable to transparency in the case of Epstein.
Khanna told NBC News to “Meet The Press” during the weekend that the petition will be posted on September 2 and that he and Massie have more than enough commitments to force a vote.

DC police order
This week will also see the end of Trump’s 30 days on Washington police, DC, with the exception of the Congress action to extend it.
Trump federally federally the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) last month as part of a broader effort to suppress crime in the capital. Under the law on the rules of the DC domicile, his authority on the local police may last 30 days unless the congress spends a joint resolution to extend it.
The president, however, suggested in August that he could circumvent the congress on the issue if he declared a national emergency – a decision with which some Republicans are already on board. In addition, the deployment by Trump of federal troops in the district has no statutory end date.
It is not yet clear which itinerary will be taken, but an executive assistant told Fox News Digital last month that the managers of the room worked with the White House on a set of laws on DC crime.

Trump nominees
The Senate Republicans were unable to set up an agreement to advance dozens of low level appointments before leaving Washington last month.
Currently, Trump has 145 candidates planned for the executive calendar, which should make their way through the committee while the legislators continue their workflow.
And the Republicans are willing to become nuclear on the Democrats of the Senate to pass their candidates. This would unilaterally mean modifying the rules of the high chamber without the Democrats.
The GOP of the Senate is expected to meet this week to discuss changes in proposed rules, which could include the shortening of the debate time for certain nominees, bringing together the nominees in a package or jumping the vote of the bell on certain candidates.
