Complete jaw mastodon found in the courtyard of the owner of New York: “ remarkable discovery ”
An owner of New York discovered a complete mastodon jaw in their backyard in what the managers call a “remarkable discovery”.
The jaw of the extinguished mammal, which was similar to an elephant, and several fragments of bone have been excavated from a property of Scotchtown by researchers from the New York State Museum and Suny Orange.
“Fossils – discovered by a curious owner – will undergo carbon dating and in -depth scientific analysis to determine the age, diet and habitat of the mastodon New York State Museum said in a press release. “Once preserved and studied, the jaw and related results will be presented in public programming in 2025, offering visitors an overview of history rich in New York ice.”
The Museum based in Albany said that the owner had first noticed the jaw when they spotted “two unusual teeth hidden by plant fronds and, intrigued, dug a little deeper to discover two additional teeth a few centimeters below the surface.”

“When I found the teeth and examined them in my hands, I knew they were something special and I decided to call the experts,” said the museum. “I am delighted that our property has given such an important discovery for the scientific community.”
The discovery is also described by the museum as the first of its kind in New York in 11 years, and a “prehistoric treasure”.

“The excavation efforts of the New York State Museum and Suny Orange have uncovered a complete and well-preserved mastodon jaw belonging to an adult individual,” he said. “In addition to the jaw, the researchers also recovered a piece of toes from the toes and a fragment of ribs, offering precious additional clues to the life and environment of the mastodon.”
Museum officials said 150 mastodon fossils had been found through New York, but a third of them came from Orange County, where the jaw was discovered.

“While the jaw is the star of the show, the expectations and additional coasts offer a precious context and the potential for additional research,” said Cory Harris, president of the Suny Orange behavior department, in a press release. “We also hope to explore the immediate zone of more bones that may have been preserved more.”
