Beta-blockers quickly become the new hot drug to fight anxiety.

The drug, also known as Propranolol, was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration in 1967 for the treatment of cardiovascular disease, and is commonly used to treat high blood pressure.

Propranolol’s prescriptions increased by 28% compared to 2020, according to global data from IQVIA cited by the Wall Street Journal.

The personality of television and the co-host of “Giggly Squad”, Paige Desorbo, was also frank on his experience with the drug, speaking openly about the use of beta-blockers to deal with panic attacks against the tour.

“I had my first real legitimate panic attack,” said DESORBO in an episode in September 2024. “When I took a beta-blocker and I got out and I did the show, I was quite well.”

What are beta-blockers?

Dr. Daniel Amen, psychiatrist, specialist in cerebral imaging and founder of Amen Clinics in California, said in an interview with Fox News Digital that beta-blockers are drugs that “calm the response to body stress”.

In his own practice, Amen said that he was always starting with “natural techniques” to relieve stress and anxiety. This may include diaphragmatic breathing, meditation, hypnosis and mindfulness.

“But sometimes your nervous system always replaces your best adaptation strategies,” he noted. “This is where beta-blockers can be incredibly useful.”

The pill works by blocking the effects of adrenaline, which then lowers heart rate, stable breathing and reduces the symptoms of physical anxiety, including racing thoughts, trembling hands and a beating heart.

“Used in responsibility, beta-blockers are an effective and low-risk tool that helps many people live more calm and more confident lives.”

“When your body thinks you are attacked, beta-blockers help calm the” false alarms “that are triggered in your nervous system,” said Amen.

“They don’t give up or darken you or do not squeeze your reflection,” he said. “Instead, they give you control of your body, so that your mind can catch up.”

“For many people, they are like pressing the” break “button on the combat or leak response, so you can think more clearly and play your best.”

The psychiatrist added that beta-blockers are also commonly used for migraines, tremors, heart rate problems and to protect the heart after a cardiovascular event.

“You shouldn’t stop them suddenly if you take them daily,” warned Amen. “The narrowing is the safest.”

Beta-blockers are considered “very safe, well tolerated and non-addictive” for most people when prescribed “thoughtfully”, according to the doctor.

Amen often prescribes beta-blockers as a “front-line drug” for people with performance anxiety, public speaking fears or other circumstances that involve physical anxiety.

“For the right person, beta-blockers can change their life,” he noted. “I saw them helping people give lectures to Ted, passing exams of the painting, singing on stage and entering in great moments of life with confidence … When you calm down your body, you free your brain to work at its best.”

The doctor said that he welcomed the recent celebrity mentions for beta-blockers, because anxiety is “one of the most common mental health challenges today”.

AMEN, however, pointed out that beta-blockers are not “magic pills” and that they work better when combined with healthy adaptation strategies, such as the use of breathing techniques, the change in toxic thinking patterns and the consumption of a brain health food.
