Head judge of the United States Supreme Court, John Roberts, warned the dangers of politicians using a stormy rhetoric against judges on Saturday.
“He is wrapped in the political dispute that a judge is working is part of the problem,” Roberts in Charlotte, in North Carolina, said at the judicial conference of the fourth circuit, a rally of judges and lawyers.
“And the danger, of course, is that someone could resume this. And we have, of course, had serious threats of violence and murder of judges simply for doing their job. So I think politicians on both sides of the aisle must keep this in mind.”
Roberts did not name anyone but seemed to be referring to President Donald Trump and the Democratic leader of the Senate Chuck Schumer when he said that he had felt obliged to express himself against the rhetoric of Democrats and Republicans in the past.

Trump has criticized the judges several times over the years, in particular by calling for the dismissal of a judge who ruled against an expulsion policy earlier this year, referring to him as “radical left” and “mad”.
Roberts replied at the time, saying: “For more than two centuries, it has been established that dismissal has not been an appropriate response to disagreement concerning a judicial decision. The normal appeal examination process exists for this purpose.”
In 2020, Roberts condemned Schumer for declaring that the judges of the Supreme Court appointed by Trump Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch “would pay the prize” concerning a case of abortion rights during the first mandate of Trump.

“You have released the whirlwind and you will pay the price,” said Schumer during a rally outside the Supreme Court at the time. “You will not know what has struck you if you are going ahead with these horrible decisions.”
Schumer later said that he was referring to the political price he thought that the Senate Republicans would pay, but he said: “I shouldn’t have used the words I have done, but in no case I was not doing a threat. I would never do, and the leader McConnell does not know.”

Roberts, at the time, said about Schumer: “The judges know that criticism comes with the territory, but threatening declarations of this type of highest levels of government are not only inappropriate, they are dangerous. All members of the court will continue to do their work, without fear or favor, from all districts.”
