Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) urge the Americans traveling to be on high alert for a deadly virus behind mosquitoes after reporting a chikungunya epidemic in Cuba this week.
This announcement comes after the information that the Chikungunya virus may have been detected in the United States, although no specific link between the two events has been revealed.
In the light of the Cuba epidemic, the health agency has published a level 2 travel notice: “Practice improved precautions”.

The chikungunya virus is distributed by infected mosquitoes, the same type that carries zika and dengue.
Symptoms generally appear during the week after being bitten, according to various health services.

The virus often causes intense fever and joint pain which is sometimes so serious that it can be disabling. Other symptoms may include headache, muscle pain, rash or swelling.

Epidemia locations
Previous epidemics of the virus took place in Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe and islands in the Indian and peaceful oceans. There is also a risk that infected travelers can disseminate the virus in unconnected areas, says the CDC.
After more than 10,000 cases emerged in China during an epidemic at the end of August, the authorities applied safety precautions similar to previous COVID protocols, such as enlarged PCR tests and quarantines.

The epidemic also spread from Foshan to Macao, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Guangxi through cases related to trips.

“Although no case of locally transmitted local virus has been reported in New York State, the department urges New Yorkers who travel internationally to take precautions,” said state health commissioner, Dr. James McDonald, in a press release in August.

For Americans traveling abroad, the CDC recommends following best practices below:
- Use a strong insectuge with Deet or Picaridin
- Wear long sleeves and pants, especially outside
- Choose accommodation that has air conditioning or windows and doors

Pregnant women should be particularly cautious because the virus may have gone from the mother to the newborn at birth, and infections in infants can be very serious.
Additional clinical trials are necessary to confirm the clinical profile.
Doctors generally recommend managing symptoms with places of rest, fluids and pain relievers. There is also a vaccine, Vimkunya, for the prevention of diseases caused by the chikungunya virus in people 12 and over.
