Hand, feet and mouth diseases (HFMD) are increasing in certain parts of the United States, public health services reported.

Very contagious viral disease is the most widespread in children under the age of 5, but people of all ages can be infected, according to centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

In Virginia, the Fairfax County Health District published an alert of six HFMD epidemics earlier this year, mainly affecting children aged 4 and under.

The Ministry of Health of the American Virgin Islands has confirmed 189 cases of illness in St. Thomas, including a possible deadly case involving a toddler.

In March, the Pan American Health Organization published an alert urging Member States to “strengthen prevention and control of hand, foot and mouth diseases, especially in children, due to their high vulnerability and the risk of serious complications in the central nervous system”.

“The number of cases increases (in particular the A6 type) and spreads to adults with more unusual symptoms, including worse (more widespread) eruptions and a loss of nails,” said Dr. Marc Siegel, senior medical analyst of Fox News, Fox News Digital.

Tina Q. Tan, MD, attending physician at the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Chicago Children’s Hospital and president of the Society for Infectious Diseases, noted that the HFMD occurs most often during the summer and the beginning of autumn when the weather is warmer.

“We see more cases right now,” she told Fox News Digital. “It is a very common infection which is generally soft.”

Viruses that most often cause disease are Coxsackie and enterovirus, said the doctor.

Propagation and symptoms

The HFMD can be transmitted by coughing, sneezing, flowing nose, kissing, sharing utensils, blister fluids and layer changes, according to Siegel.

People can also broadcast the virus after touching contaminated objects and surfaces.

“The eruption is most often on the hands and feet, appearing as raised or flat red spots that can turn into blisters,” said a doctor at Fox News Digital. (istock)

Siegel noted that the HFMD is generally soft and has blisters in the mouth and a rash on the hands and feet, as well as fever and sore throat.

“It is contagious for several weeks, but especially the first week after the start of the symptoms,” the doctor told Fox News Digital.

“Patients or parents should consult medical care if they feel uncomfortable with the symptoms they or their child present and the symptoms aggravate,” advised a doctor. (istock)

The disease is known to propagate easily with concerns and school environments.

“”Infants and children can return to school or daycare when they feel better, “said Siegel.

Tan agreed that they could come back as long as they have no fever, feel good enough to drink and participate in activities, and do not have open lesions or abundant drool when they have oral wounds.

Treatment and prevention

Most people only suffer from a light disease and improve without treatment within seven to 10 days.

People can manage pain and fever with over -the -counter medication. They should also drink a lot of liquids to prevent dehydration, recommends the CDC.

Although the complications are rare, the CDC advises that pregnant women see a doctor if they contract HFMD.

“Patients or parents should request medical care if they feel uncomfortable with the symptoms they or their child present and the symptoms aggravate; if they are unable to take adequate liquid and there is a decrease in urine production; or each time they feel that there is a change in the mental state,” said Tan.

“The disease is very contagious, so it can spread quickly in daycare and school circles,” said a doctor. (istock)

“This can also cause a loss of nails in people who have had fingers,” she said. “Very rarely, this can cause serious complications such as viral meningitis, encephalitis and paralysis.”

To avoid the very contagious virus, the CDC recommends washing your hands frequently with soap and water.
