Canada plans to recognize a Palestinian state in September at a United Nations meeting, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said on Wednesday.
“We work ourselves, with others, to preserve the possibility of a solution to two states, so as not to allow the facts on the ground, the deaths on the ground, the colonies in the field, the expropriations on the ground, to achieve such a measure that this is not possible,” said Carney.
Carney said this decision was subject to the Palestinian authority’s commitment to reforms, including commitments to reform its governance and organize the general elections next year during which Hamas “cannot play any role”.
Israel has criticized Carney’s position, calling it “award for Hamas” which harms the efforts to reach a cease-fire and release the remaining hostages still held by the terrorist group after its October 7, 2023, attacking the Jewish state.

“Israel rejects the Declaration of the Prime Minister of Canada,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Israel said in a statement. “The change in the position of the Canadian government at present is a reward for Hamas and harms the efforts to make a cease-fire in Gaza and a framework for the release of the hostages.”
Carney’s announcement came after France last week that it would recognize a Palestinian state and one day after Great Britain said it would recognize the state in the UN if the War of Israel-Hamas in Gaza had not stopped by then.
French President Emmanuel Macron, who spoke with Carney before the announcement of Canada, said that the recognition of a Palestinian state “would revive a perspective of peace in the region”.
The announcements of some of the closest allies of Israel reflect growing international indignation in the face of the Gaza humanitarian crisis, adding more pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his government.

“Canada condemns the fact that the Israeli government has enabled a disaster to take place in Gaza,” said Carney.
The White House also opposes the decision to recognize a Palestinian state, saying that President Donald Trump agrees with Israel that it would be “enriching Hamas”.
“As the president said, he enriched Hamas if he recognizes a Palestinian state, and he does not think they should be rewarded,” said a White House official. “So he’s not going to do it.
The American special envoy in the Middle East Steve Witkoff is expected to go to Israel on Thursday to discuss the situation in Gaza. Trump said this week, he expected the centers to be set up to feed more people in the region.
