Bowser: DC needs “hundreds of additional police officers” while Trump’s federal takeover ends soon

Washington, DC, mayor Muriel Bowser said that his city was to “add hundreds of additional police officers” while the Trump Department of the Metropolitan Police Department ends.
Bowser admitted Wednesday while announcing “a new labor agreement between the Columbia district and the fraternal DC police order” aimed at strengthening the retention and recruitment of agents.
“Since I have been mayor, in the past ten years, I have been my priority to make sure that we have been hiring the best of the best. That we keep the officers that we have to keep DC safe. And we have always believed that returning to 4000 officers is our goal. So, currently, we have a lot of space to grow our department,” said Bowser.
“This year, we hired 135 new recruits and welcomed 124 cadets in our pipeline. And we have to add hundreds of additional police officers. We are currently at 3,188 sworn officers,” she added. “This agreement offers a salary increase of 13% for our officers, sergeants, lieutenants and superiors, who will start on October 1 of this year.”

In early August, President Donald Trump said a public security emergency in the city and invoked article 740 of the Columbia District House Act to place the Metropolitan Police Department under Federal Control. This emergency will expire on September 10, according to Bowser.

“During and after the presidential emergency, the Sbeoc will manage the district response, will coordinate centralized communications and provide coordination with the federal police to the maximum extent authorized by law in the district,” said Bowser’s office.

The order said that “since August 11, 2025, due to the efforts of cooperation between district and federal officials, violent crimes in the district have decreased significantly”.
“Let me tell you unequivocally that the mayor’s order does not extend Trump’s urgency. In fact, he does exactly the opposite. What he does is (he) throws a framework to find out how we are going to leave the emergency,” said Bowser on Wednesday. “The urgency ends on September 10. The only way to legally extend is light.
