The Attorney General Pam Bondi issued a two -page prescription by announcing illegal immigration protections in Washington, DC, and naming a “emergency police commissioner” for the city’s metropolitan police service on Thursday.
Bondi’s order, entitled “Restoring security and security in the Columbia district”, mainly targeted the policies of the city of Sanctuary in the national capital, canceling any prescription which limits the way in which metropolitan police can manage interactions and incidents with illegal immigrants.
She also stripped the power of the police chief in the metropolitan region Pamela Smith by appointing Terry Cole from the administration of the drug application as “Emergency Police Commissioner”, granting him all the “powers and duties” in the post.

Cole has the ability to issue general orders, decrees and written directives affecting all members of the department, and existing managers of the ministry must receive its approval before issuing their own directives.
Bondi has also explicitly canceled three orders issued by metropolitan police in the last two years linked to illegal immigration – the most recent being an executive decree issued by Smith earlier Thursday limiting cooperation with the federal immigration authorities.

While Smith’s order said that metro officers could now help “share information on people who are not in the custody of MPD” and provide “transport for employees of the Federal Immigration Agency and subjects held”, it prohibited personnel from doing “any survey through any database only in order to inquire about” immigration status.
“Members should not stop people on the basis only of federal immigration mandates or prisoners as long as there is no additional criminal mandate or underlying offense for which the individual is subject to arrest,” said the order.

Bondi canceled this order a few hours later. It also suspended a general order of June 2024 limiting surveys on immigration status and a general order of October 2023 preventing arrests only for federal immigration mandates.
“Insofar as the provisions of this order conflict with all existing MPD guidelines, these directives are canceled by this,” concluded Bondi in his order on Thursday.

The ordinance comes after President Donald Trump published a decree declaring a criminal emergency in the national capital on Monday and announcing federal takeover of the police service.
Since then, federal police and the National Guard have been visible throughout the district. Only Wednesday evening, many agencies arrested 45 people, including 29 illegal immigrants – as part of the repression of major crime.

“The residents of the District of Columbia, the thousands of Americans who go to the district to work every day, and the millions of tourists around the world who visit the capital of our country have the right to feel security and to be free from the scourge of violent crime,” said Bondi’s order.
