An Iranian plot to assassinate Israel’s ambassador to Mexico has been foiled, officials revealed Friday.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps reportedly attempted to kill the ambassador late last year, but their efforts were neutralized. Reuters reported, quoting a US official.

“We thank Mexico’s security and law enforcement agencies for thwarting an Iranian-led terrorist network that sought to attack the Israeli ambassador to Mexico,” Israel’s Foreign Ministry said on Fox News on Friday.

“The Israeli security and intelligence community will continue to work tirelessly, in full cooperation with security and intelligence agencies around the world, to thwart terrorist threats from Iran and its proxies against Israeli and Jewish targets around the world,” the statement added.

The U.S. official told Reuters the plot targeting Ambassador Einat Kranz Neiger “was contained and did not pose a current threat.”

“This is just the latest in a long history of deadly targeting by Iran against diplomats, journalists, dissidents and anyone who disagrees with them, something that should deeply concern all countries where there is an Iranian presence,” the official reportedly added.
