Archaeologists have unearthed a massive mine of gold coins in the Czech Republic, struck by a civilization lost for a long time – with the site described by those responsible as “exceptional”.
The discovery was announced by the Museum of Eastern Bohemia in Hradec Králové. The Celtic colony was found along the road to a future highway, the July press release said.
The site dates back to the period, archaeologists finding that the colony culminated in the second century BC

It served as a “supra-regional trade and production center” which linked central Europe to the distant corners of the ancient world.
The period La Tène marked the height of Celtic power in Europe, shortly before Roman expansion in the region.

Parts of gold and silver were discovered on the site, as well as amber and “proof of the production of luxury pottery”.
Excavators have also found many metallic objects, as well as fragments of ceramic ships and remains of housing, production facilities and one or two “likely” sanctuaries.
“It represents one of the largest assemblies of artifacts never discovered in the Czech Republic.”
The researchers took everything they found – and left with more than 22,000 bags of artefacts, one of the greatest archaeological features in the history of the country.
