An earthquake of magnitude 6.0 hit eastern Afghanistan near its border shared with Pakistan on Sunday evening, killing at least 250 people and injuring hundreds of others.
The earthquake was reported at 11:47 p.m. to around 17 miles in the north of the city of Jalalabad in Nangarhar province, US Geological Survey said.
The area is difficult to access, therefore the extent of damage and injuries is not fully known at the moment.
The Kunar Disaster Management Authority said in a statement that at least 250 people had been killed and 500 others injured, although these figures were to increase.

The earthquake was only 5 miles deep and the less deep earthquakes tend to cause more damage.
An earthquake of magnitude 4.5 occurred in the same province just after midnight.

Afghanistan is particularly vulnerable to earthquakes, especially in the Hindu mountain range of Kush where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates meet.

One of the deadliest natural disasters to strike Afghanistan from recent memory occurred on October 7, 2023, when an earthquake of 6.3 struck the Asian nation of the South Center, followed by high aftershocks.

The Taliban government estimated that at least 4,000 people have perished, although the UN has given a much lower number of deaths of around 1,500.
