Advantages for UN senior executives under surveillance as they escape

The Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, ordered the staff to reduce budgets before the budgetary vote of 2026 in the context of a broader reform effort thanks to his UN80 initiative.

The diplomatic initiate told Fox News Digital that the current “zero growth” budget for 2026 still includes “many advantages” for professional UN staff and the United Nations Director as well as assistant secretaries, subsecretaries and secretary general.

Fox News Digital recently reported that Guterres had won $ 418,348, which is a higher basic salary than the president Donald Trump receives. And that does not include some of the advantages that the UN chief obtains, including a plush residence in Manhattan and a car focused on the driver.

Housing allowance and tax exemption

Other expenses that may be compensated include paid taxes and housing costs.

The rent for the United Nations personnel can be subsidized up to 40% if it “exceeds a so-called rent threshold” according to the income of an employee.

Many Member States have exempt UN employees from paying taxes, but organizational employees who have to pay taxes at their station are reimbursed for the cost.

Dependent costs

There are important advantages for staff with dependents.

Staff receive an allowance of 6% of their net income if their spouses earn less than a general entry -level service salary.

Parents who are parents receive a flat allowance of $ 2,929 for children under the age of 18 or who are under 21 and in secondary education. A second children’s allowance for staff without spouses is set at $ 1,025.

Difficulties, relocation, mobility and other incentives

Future cuts in senior remuneration?

In response to questions about Fox News Digital Declarations of the Source on the remuneration of UN employees being equally with that of an investment banker, the spokesperson for Guterres, Stephane Dujarric, said that the affirmation was “ridiculous” and “demonstrates ignorance of the United Nations and the banks of investment banks”.

Dujarric added that the International Public Service Commission, an independent group of 15 names experts who creates the wage system, benefits and allowances for the UN, “undertakes a complete review of the remuneration for the international and higher personnel category”, with the results provided for the presentation in 2026.
