The Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, ordered the staff to reduce budgets before the budgetary vote of 2026 in the context of a broader reform effort thanks to his UN80 initiative.
A large part of the belt occurs at a time when the Trump administration sought to save money with the help of Doge. In March, Guterres warned against discounts of expenses to the UN, declaring that “making funding discounts will make the world less healthy, less safe and less prosperous”. The United States, as the first donor for the world organization, have given billions in recent years, while paying about a third of its budget.
However, the organizational belt belt does not seem to have struck the United Nations staff of higher level.
“Americans don’t even see that,” a diplomatic source told Fox News Digital. “These people who are appointed to take care of the poor people get better advantages than all investment banks.”

The diplomatic initiate told Fox News Digital that the current “zero growth” budget for 2026 still includes “many advantages” for professional UN staff and the United Nations Director as well as assistant secretaries, subsecretaries and secretary general.
Fox News Digital recently reported that Guterres had won $ 418,348, which is a higher basic salary than the president Donald Trump receives. And that does not include some of the advantages that the UN chief obtains, including a plush residence in Manhattan and a car focused on the driver.
In addition, although the UN documents say that the United Nations staff for the elderly “will be the first thing to be reduced”, the source says that “in the 2026 budget, none of this is affected”.
Here is a list of advantages:
Salary and multiplier
The United Nations professional staff, including Guterres, receives a general salary as well as an additional multiplier of their salary according to their position. Multiplicators are supposed to “preserve the equivalent purchasing power for all service stations” and can range from 16% to Eswatini, Africa, 86.8% in Switzerland, according to data provided to Fox News Digital by a United Nations source.
The United Nations remuneration scale should be compared with “jobs classified in an equivalent manner in the comparator’s public service to Washington, DC”, with compensation on “10 to 20% before the comparison service” to “attract and retain the staff of all countries, including the comparator”.

Housing allowance and tax exemption
Other expenses that may be compensated include paid taxes and housing costs.
The rent for the United Nations personnel can be subsidized up to 40% if it “exceeds a so-called rent threshold” according to the income of an employee.
Many Member States have exempt UN employees from paying taxes, but organizational employees who have to pay taxes at their station are reimbursed for the cost.
Dependent costs
There are important advantages for staff with dependents.
Staff receive an allowance of 6% of their net income if their spouses earn less than a general entry -level service salary.
Parents who are parents receive a flat allowance of $ 2,929 for children under the age of 18 or who are under 21 and in secondary education. A second children’s allowance for staff without spouses is set at $ 1,025.

UN employees can receive subsidies to cover part of the education costs of dependent children up to four years of post -secondary training. Refunds are calculated on a sliding scale. In a calculation of the sample, the UN explains that it would reimburse $ 34,845 in tuition fees of $ 47,000.
Boarding costs can also be reimbursed up to $ 5,300 during primary and secondary education.
Pension fund, health costs
The United Nations staff have access to the joint retirement fund of the United Nations, which allows employees to contribute 23.7% of the “remuneration of retirement, with two thirds paid by the organization and a third by the staff member”.
Travel expenses
The UN pays travel costs for staff “during the initial appointment, on the change of service, in separation of service, for trips in official activity, for home trips and traveling to visit family members”. In some cases, the UN also pays eligible spouses and dependent children to travel.
Travel costs include a “daily subsistence allowance (DSA)” intended to cover “the average cost of accommodation and other expenses”. Eligible family members receive half of the DSA, while staff at the director level and more receive an additional DSA supplement.

Difficulties, relocation, mobility and other incentives
For personnel who modify assignments in certain service positions, incentives for United Nations mobility starts at $ 6,700 and can reach more than $ 15,075.
If the evolution of stations for an assignment lasts more than a year, the benefits of the installation to understand 30 days DSA for staff and half-dsa for eligible families, as well as a month’s net salary and a month of adjustment after the tension post. Moving expenses may include complete or partial removal and transport of household items, or storage of these items.
Difficulties of difficulties between $ 5,930 and $ 23,720 can be granted for non -local staff in certain service positions. The UN issues allocations of $ 19,800 for personnel with dependent people and $ 7,500 for staff without depending on the stations of non -family service “to recognize the increase in the level of financial and psychological difficulties initiated by involuntary separation”. The danger salary of $ 1,645 can also be allocated to staff whose association or employment can make them “clearly, constant and directly targeted”, or in service posts where there is a “high risk of undergoing collateral damage in a war or an active armed conflict”.
Licensed employees
Licensed employees are also authorized for separation payments, generally constituting several months of salary if their appointment has been terminated due to “the abolition of the post office or the reduction of staff; poor health or incapacity for additional service; unsatisfactory service; agreed dismissal ”. Persons terminated for an unsatisfactory service or fault can receive half of the typical separation payment payment.
A repatriation subsidy can also be paid to the staff who have been in service to expatriate for at least five years, unless the staff is “briefly dismissed”.

Future cuts in senior remuneration?
In response to questions about Fox News Digital Declarations of the Source on the remuneration of UN employees being equally with that of an investment banker, the spokesperson for Guterres, Stephane Dujarric, said that the affirmation was “ridiculous” and “demonstrates ignorance of the United Nations and the banks of investment banks”.
Dujarric did not deny that the 2026 budget proposal does not include any reduction in staff or benefits. “The budget proposal for 2026 was prepared before the launch of the UN80 initiative,” he said. “We are currently working on the identification of efficiency, including the reductions of the position, and a revised proposal will be subject to the General Assembly in the fall for its deliberations, which generally take place between October and December.”

Dujarric added that the International Public Service Commission, an independent group of 15 names experts who creates the wage system, benefits and allowances for the UN, “undertakes a complete review of the remuneration for the international and higher personnel category”, with the results provided for the presentation in 2026.
“The secretary general has no authority over CISC decisions or the appointment of its members,” he said.
