Texas governor Greg Abbott warned the state’s democrats that the threat of arrest on his return to Texas would last “for” Sunday “years.

Abbott made the statement during an interview on “Fox News Sunday” with the host Shannon Bream. He argued that he was in his power to keep the Texas legislative assembly indefinitely during a special session, extending the sanctions for the Democrats who fled the State.

“I am authorized to call a special session every 30 days. It lasts 30 days. And as soon as it is finished, I will call another, then another, then another, then another,” said Abbott.

“If they show themselves in the state of Texas, they will be arrested and taken to the Capitol. If they want to escape this arrest, they will have to stay outside the state of Texas for years literally,” he added.

The warning comes as Abbott seeks to withdraw the delinquent democrats from his functions, arguing that they have abdicated their roles under the constitution of the State.

“We have a situation where legislators violate the law in article 3 of the Constitution of Texas where they are required to act on bills. Because they violate this constitutional mandate, this means that they do not fulfill their oath and that they can be removed from its functions in this legal action that I take,” he said.

At least 100 members of Texas House of 150 members Must be present to lead business and around 50 of the Democrats have left. Abbott says that their commitment to vote as elected representatives of the State is a duty and is “not optional”.

In addition to the threat of prolonged arrest of Abbott, the Republican governor also threatened to increase the redistribution margin for his party if the legislators do not return to Austin.

“What I think now is that if they are not starting to introduce themselves, I can start expanding,” said Abbott during an appearance on the “ruthless” podcast. “We can make six or seven or eight new seats that we will add on the republican side.”
