The humanitarian aid transported by the second Greta Thunberg flotilla will not even reach Gaza due to a lack of accosing installations and a “legitimate” blockade from Israel, said a maritime expert.

While the Bateaux of the Swedish activist left Barcelona on Sunday, Thunberg was joined by figures, including the actor of Game of Thrones Liam Cunningham and the former mayor of Barcelona Ada Colau.

The Global Sumud Flotilla, composed of around 70 boats, transports help, including food, water and medicines and hoping to bring this to civilians in the Gaza strip.

The flotilla should be joined by more boats before reaching Gaza around September 14 or 15.

“The whole world knows that it happens and that the FDI will maintain a safety perimeter in the water to protect the beaches of Gaza,” said Professor James Kraska, SJD, Fox News Digital.

“There are no port installations in this area to unload anything and Gaza does not have a sufficient port to receive such a large flotilla. There is a small fishing port, but it is inadequate.

“The United States has built a temporary port at considerable costs, around 200 million dollars, and dismantled it because weather and meteorology in the region have made it unsustainable,” said US Naval College teacher.

During a press conference in Barcelona before his departure, Thunberg supervised the mission as an act of survival.

“History here concerns Palestine. History here is how people are deliberately deprived of very fundamental means to survive,” said Thunberg, alleging that Israel violated international law by illegally intercepting boats in international waters “and preventing humanitarian aid from reaching civilians.

This is not Thunberg’s first attempt to provide help. In June, she was expelled after her ship, Madleen, was arrested by Israeli forces with 11 others on board.

Professor Kraska stressed that the blocking of Israel is a lawful operation during an armed conflict to prevent ships from entering, but he must meet certain requirements, including an opinion, efficiency and impartial application.

“In the end, Israel may defend the blockade,” said Kraska. “But it is not only the law – politics and practical realities are also involved. The two parties weigh these dimensions.

“Israel, however, argues that its maritime security operations, which resemble a blockade, are a legal measure of the war and will act to prevent ships from mooring.

“There is not a controlling story: there is international law, the political situation and the tactical dimension,” he added.
