Jesse Agus Martinez35, was stopped by Customs and Border Protection at the US-Mexico border on October 23 after guards set up a record high. very A suspicious bulge in his pants…and when they examined him, they found two small brown bags stuffed in his underwear – each holding a rare orange-fronted parrot.
Parrots – which are Critically endangeredaccording to the International Union for Conservation of Nature — were breathing but heavily sedated, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Southern California.
Martinez told agents he stuffed the birds down his pants because he didn’t have the necessary papers to bring them into the United States… and said he planned to keep them in a shoebox in his truck.
He’s now been charged with federal smuggling…and if found guilty, could face a $250,000 fine and up to 20 years in prison.
As for the birds, veterinarians treated them and put them in quarantine – and their condition is said to be stable now🙏. The US Fish and Wildlife Service is conducting an official investigation into the case.
